Color Crush: Renaissance Painting

Color Crush: Renaissance Painting | Interior Design Dallas | Barbara Gilbert Interiors
European Renaissance art was created during the 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries, heavily influenced by an increased interest in nature, a revival of classical education and forms, and a stronger idea of individualism. It was part of a broader rebirth in the areas of philosophy, literature, music, and science and some magnificent works of painting, sculpture and decorative arts were created.
One of the most famous is Sandro Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus, my Color Crush inspiration for today. It was painted in the mid-1480s in Florence, Italy, for the Medici family. As experts have noted, the painting prominently depicts Venus in the center, born out of the foam as she rides to shore. On the left, the figure of Zephyrus carries the nymph Chloris (aka “Aura”) as he blows the wind to guide Venus. On shore the goddess of Spring, Pomona, waits for Venus.
The Birth of Venus has bright colors, painted with a mixture of egg yolk and light paint that makes it look like a fresco. This color palette has a naturalistic vibe that would invoke feelings of calm in any room in a home. Deep greens, in particular, are soothing, and even the oranges and corals are not overly bright.
