Travel is a big inspiration for me and I love the colors I find when I’m globe hopping. This photo of a Thai temple is full of rich hues that make a beautiful Color Crush color palette.
The shades of blue in the sky are met by the gold and brown hues of the building itself. The architecture of Thailand, like this classic example, is a major part of the country’s cultural legacy. Roofs are the quintessential elements in Thai public architecture, shaping the character of the buildings with their elaborate structure and decoration. The ornamented multi-tier roofs are, however, reserved for temples and palaces as well as public buildings such as government offices, university halls and monuments, according to The Study of Thai Traditional Architecture as a Resource for Contemporary Building Design in Thailand. I love the colors here — what do you think?

Even in the middle of winter, it is possible to find color inspiration all around us. Case in point, these lovely winter berries, my Color Crush this week.
The red and pink colors jump out at first, but there are many soft shades in this image, too. The greens and blues are gentle shades and would work together beautifully. What do you think?

I hope you stayed warm this week during Christmas. We had a major cold snap in North Texas and brrr! It was cold outside.
This frosty weather is my inspiration for this week’s Color Crush color palette. I’ve found an image of a frost-covered winter tree and I love the soothing hues in it! Undertones of purple infuse every shade, from the ice blue-purple to a deep eggplant.
In the psychology of color, purple combines the energy of red with the soothing qualities of blue. The result is a color that stimulates imagination, an introspective color that allows us to get in touch with our deeper thoughts. It would be perfect for many rooms in the house, from a home office to a child’s bedroom. What do you think?

Are you ready for Christmas in just over a week? I’m planning my holiday menu and the dessert planning gave me inspiration for this week’s Color Crush color palette: Christmas pie. This one is an apple-cranberry concoction and creates some rich, vibrant hues, as well as more neutral browns and taupe.
Pinks are interesting in the psychology of color. Red is a powerful color that can raise blood pressure, respiration, heartbeat, and pulse rate — it definitely shouldn’t be used in a room where you want to relax and take it easy! But its lighter cousin pink is a horse of another color, so to speak. Pink has a calming effect on people. In fact, pink has been used in prison holding cells to reduce erratic behavior among inmates, and it works. Isn’t that amazing? So while some people might think pinks aren’t good in big doses, you can count on it making you feel calm and safe in moderate splashes.

This week’s Color Crush color palette comes from an unexpected place: a deep space nebula. I was looking at something on Facebook and a friend had posted news about Voyager I. Launched in 1977 by NASA, this space probe is still communicating with earth! Amazing. The technology of 40 years ago is still working.
Seeing that information got me googling and looking up pictures from deep space, where I came across this beauty. Look at those rich colors. This color palette would look dynamite in so many rooms, with its purple and blue hues, but would particularly be great in a bedroom. The psychology of these colors would lead to relaxation and calm energy, great for a room where we sleep.

This week’s Color Crush color palette is inspired by the colors of autumn and its falling leaves. Is there a prettier sight? Even here in Texas, we’re seeing our trees turn, and it is beautiful. It makes me think if the poem Autumn Song by Dante Gabriel Rossetti:
Know’st thou not at the fall of the leaf
How the heart feels a languid grief
Laid on it for a covering,
And how sleep seems a goodly thing
In Autumn at the fall of the leaf?
And how the swift beat of the brain
Falters because it is in vain,
In Autumn at the fall of the leaf
Knowest thou not? and how the chief
Of joys seems—not to suffer pain?
Know’st thou not at the fall of the leaf
How the soul feels like a dried sheaf
Bound up at length for harvesting,
And how death seems a comely thing
In Autumn at the fall of the leaf?

The quiet of the morning with a sunrise on the lake is my inspiration for my Color Crush color palette, a bi-weekly feature here on my blog.
This week, I’ve looked to nature, as I so often do. This photo makes me imagine sitting nearby, cup of coffee in-hand, enjoying the view. It looks quiet and peaceful, don’t you think? And some of the colors are subdued and soft, like the blues and greens. But sunrise is anything but tame, and the bold and bright hues attest to that: purple, pink, orange, and yellow! This color palette would be a dynamic choice for any room.

Sometimes, the colors of nature are the best inspiration for a room design.
For this week’s Color Crush color palette, I’ve found a beautiful photo of dramatic ocean waves hitting rocks at the shoreline. These colors are subdued and lovely, ranging from taupe, medium brown, and chocolate, to the lightest gray, and shades of blue that grow progressively darker in hue. The most saturated is almost a teal color that would look great as an accent color. The lighter shades would be great as couch colors or paint. The overall effect would be calm and organic. What do you think?

Peafowl, like butterflies, are one of nature’s most showy creations. The male peacocks have spectacular plumage they’ll show off and strut from time to time, especially if there’s a peahen nearby. (If you get a chance, look up videos on YouTube of the peacock courting a female — it’s so impressive to watch them show off their feathers.) Their vibrant iridescent plumage colors range from deep blues and greens to the lightest purples and creams. Some peacocks even have white and cream colored feathers instead of bright colors. They’re all beautiful.
In using the color palette pictures above, any of the colors in the palette can be “dialed up” or down to vary the intensity of the hue. And any of them could be made iridescent, which would make great pops of color to accent the overall scheme. What do you think? Where would you use these hues?

Earlier this week, I wrote about interior decorating ideas to create a cozy fall atmosphere. Since the season starts tomorrow, I chose a festive fall photo for my Color Crush this week, too. Pumpkins, squash, and gourds are actually fruits (you learn something new every day!), mostly native to North America. They come in a huge variety of colors, from rich reds and spicy pinks to deep ochres, bright oranges, and pale yellows. This give you a lot of options when decorating with them or using them as a jumping off point for a room’s color scheme.
This photo offers a beautiful array of hues, from pale and medium greens and yellows and pink, to deeper, more saturated orange and red. I think fall colors are the most vibrant and soothing of any season. What do you think?
