Autumn’s vibrant colors inspire many to go leaf peeping around the United States, seeking out the beautiful foliage that starts to blaze with color as weather gets cooler. Fall starts this Saturday, Sept. 22, and you can bet the trees — and leaf peepers — are ready to start the fun!
In New England, leap peeping is most prevalent in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. But those aren’t the only places to go. In the Mid-Atlantic, many people plan roadtrips around New York’s Adirondack and Catskill Mountains, as well as the Finger Lakes region. There’s even leaf peeping in the Midwest, where the fiery foliage impresses on the trail around the Great Lakes from Ohio to Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.
For today’s Color Crush, I’ve chosen the kind of scene leaf peepers would love to find on their journey, a quaint country road framed by trees as Mother Nature shows off her skills. This nature-inspired color palette has a lot of soothing hues, like the greens and earth colors. The red would be a wonderful accent color in this scheme, and the palette could work in any room in the home, particularly a living area.

The aurora borealis offer an a dramatic, magical display in parts of the Northern hemisphere and I’m enchanted by the shades of deep purples, blues, and greens against a black sky with pinpricks of light from stars. Wow!
This week’s Color Crush color palette is inspired by the aurora borealis, which has started already this year in Iceland, for example. So just what causes this dazzling natural phenomenon? In a nutshell, sunspots release solar winds off the sun and into space. They make their way to Earth in about 40 hours and show up near the arctic circle when the earth is tilted as it is in late summer and early fall.
These deep colors would make a huge statement as a color palette, perhaps in a media room, game room, or secondary living space. Dark colors can absolutely be successfully employed in a house — don’t be intimidated! Just know the psychological effect of the colors will be at their greatest because of this intense saturation. Would you choose it?

Orange is a powerful color, one that is associated with joy, adventure, and creativity. It combines the warmth and happiness of yellow with the energy and stimulation of red, and it’s also thought to invoke feelings of optimism. It’s also intimidating for a lot of people, who might admire an orange interior, but never consider using it themselves. What a shame!
So for this week’s Color Crush color palette, I’ve chosen a photo of an orange butterfly as my jumping-off point. As you can see, orange works with a lot of other hues and complements them beautifully. I wouldn’t recommend using bright orange as a whole-room color because it can stimulate the appetite and raise the heartbeat, but when it is an accent, its vibrancy can’t be beat! Try pairing shades of orange with pinks, greens, and neutrals for an inspired look. You can always bring home paint chips, swatches of fabric, or even throw pillows and blankets to “practice” before you commit to a color palette.

Claude Monet’s waterlilies are his most iconic works, about 250 oil paintings depicting his home’s garden in Giverny, France. They were the main focus of the last 30 years of his life and they are instantly recognizable.
My Color Crush color palette for this week looks at The Waterlily Pond with Japanese Bridge, painted in 1899 by Monet. Amazingly, he planted the waterlilies on a lark, but once they became established, they became his primary source of inspiration. He wrote, “I saw, all of a sudden, that my pond had become enchanted… Since then, I have had no other model.”
I can see why these waterlilies would inspire him — the combination of the blooms with the arching Japanese bridge, weeping willows, and lush vegetation make for an enchanting and picturesque vignette. The colors are soft and lovely, with blues and greens, even pinks and purples. This color palette would be a soothing one for a bedroom or living area, don’t you think?

I’ve mentioned before how inspiring I find travel: the sights, sounds, and smells are a delight, especially with the hills of Tuscany. An iconic photo of the region informs my Color Crush color palette for this week. It makes me think of wine tastings, cooking classes, and bike rides under the Italian sun. Doesn’t that all sound wonderful? Tuscany is easily one of the most enchanting places on earth, in my opinion.
The colors of this palette are earthy, creating a beautiful combination that would work well in most spaces, from living room to board room. In the psychology of color, greens create calm and are pleasing to the senses. They are associated with peace, harmony, nurturing, and leisurely energy. Brown, the color of the land, is associated with reliability and stability. What do you think?

Moroccan architecture is one of the great styles in the world, dating back 2,000 years and showing multiple historic influences. Because of its location on the northwest coast of Africa, Morocco has been influenced by many cultures, from regional tribes to Arab neighbors and European colonizers. The architectural result is an enchanting amalgam of incredible details, rich colors, beautiful ornamentation, soaring arches, and geometric patterning.
Morocco is filled with breathtaking architectural gems like the photo I’ve chosen for this week’s Color Crush color palette. Shades of blue-green, blue, and blue-violet are predominant, and in color theory, this is called analogous pairing because the three shades are next to each other on the color wheel and it’s a classic color scheme, masterfully employed in this intricate arch. These cool shades work together marvelously with grays, creams, whites, and tan accents. This is a color palette that would look beautiful in interior design.

One of my favorite parts of travel is seeing historic buildings — there’s always so much to learn when you go somewhere new. This week’s Color Crush color palette comes from a photo of a copper-roofed old church with some wonderful hues. This is a common site over parts of Europe, the copper that has turned a green color, contrasting with a terra cotta colored roof.
The beiges, grays, and browns of the walls and steeple act as a neutral backdrop for this color palette, with teal and terra cotta as pops of color. This would be a dynamic choice for a living room or dining room — green, being an earth color, is calming, as is the taupe and brown. The terra cotta would be a fun accent color to incorporate in window coverings or pillows, don’t you think? How would you use this color palette?

Fontana di Trevi is one of the most famous fountains in the world and one of my favorites in Italy. This Roman Baroque masterpiece stands 86 feet tall and I’ll bet you recognize it from Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita if you haven’t seen it yourself in person. Made from Travertine stone quarried near Rome, this masterpiece was opened and inaugurated in 1762. The design is just as striking and beautiful today, don’t you think?
I love this photo of the fontana di Trevi, which is my inspiration for my Color Crush color palette this week. The blues, pale purples, and browns would make for a soothing space — wouldn’t this look great in a bedroom? Where would you use it?

Spring is here and wildflowers are poking their sleepy heads up from the greening grasses as everything prepares to explode with color! These beautiful poppies are the centerpiece of my Color Crush this week, which features vibrant shades of red, red-orange, blues, purples, and even a deep green. Love the way nature can put together something that turns heads every time.
This color palette is bold and fun — lighter shades of the blues and purples would be a great choice for any room where you want to feel calm. The reds and red-orange would make a dynamite accent color. There’s so much energy in those hues! Green is a grounding color, that of the earth, and it soothes in any room. The deeper the saturation, the more profound the effect of a color on our mood or psychology, so always keep that in mind when planning your color palette.

Spring is just under a month away, starting on Tuesday, March 20. I can hardly wait for the magnificent burst of colors that come with that season. One of my favorite displays is cherry blossoms. In the United States, Washington, D.C., has some of the most magnificent blooms, and for the second year in a row, a few of the cherry blossoms are coming out early. I figured if they’re already making an appearance there, I can write about cherry blossoms here for this week’s Color Crush.
This color palette is soft and sweet, something that would be calming, especially the pink. Little known fact: pink is actually a physically soothing color. This is so much so that 30 cells in Switzerland prisons have been painted pink in an attempt to calm down aggressive inmates. So imagine what this color could do for an average person’s anxiety or restlessness! The psychology of color is an amazing thing.
