Colors of the Year for 2018
“I never met a color I didn’t like.” — Dale Chihuly
Every year, major paint companies tell us their predictions for upcoming color trends. These are about more than a favored hue; they tell us about big design trends and the country’s “mood,” if you will. These predictions start conversations about how we live with color, something I love to hear.
For 2017, we had Poised Taupe, Violet Verbena, Greenery, and Byzantine Blue as some of the predicted colors of the year. Many of these had to do with a feel of coziness and nesting, and a connection to nature.
This year, the colors of the year for 2018 are far more dramatic and bold. Let’s take a look!
PPG: Black Flame
Looking into their crystal ball, PPG names Black Flame the color of the year 2018. This is black with deep indigo undertones, meant to evoke privacy and classic modernism.
“Black Flame acts like a black curtain, allowing your other décor elements to take center stage,” said Dee Schlotter, PPG senior color marketing manager. “The blend of [black and indigo] makes it incredibly versatile – use it on a statement wall, with a matte finish on a ceiling, with high gloss on a naturally-lit staircase, on cabinets, interior and exterior doors, and in many more places. The versatile hue can also provide strength and a modern luxe vibe to spaces with a lot of whites, blush pinks and soft pastels.”
Black is a powerful color, as I noted in my post on the psychology of color. It can be gloomy in large doses, so be sure to balance it with other colors, like in the photo above.
Olympic: Black Magic
Olympic Paint’s prediction is Black Magic, a hue that evokes glamor, strength, and most importantly, privacy. In past years, consumers have gravitated toward open, airy spaces that are thought to leave room for exposure. Olympic paint experts say in the current day, “consumers often feel uneasy, restless or like their privacy is being invaded, so they crave deep, comforting colors that offer a welcomed escape from the chaos of daily life.”
Glidden: Deep Onyx
Glidden calls Deep Onyx, its color of the year for 2018, “the most forgotten neutral.” It encourages a “less is more” approach to décor color, according to PPG experts.
“Black can be overlooked as a neutral color, but it works well on an accent wall or as an alternative to white paint on doors, trim and cabinets,” said Misty Yeomans, PPG color marketing manager, Glidden paints. “The sense of ease and authenticity it brings to a home can’t be denied. Just like a little black dress, Deep Onyx is a classic, timeless staple.”
Behr: In the Moment
Behr bucks the black trend with a prediction of In the Moment as its color of the year 2018. This is a cool spruce blue inspired by nature, a soothing, restorative coalescence of blue, gray, and green.
Here’s how they describe it: “This comfortable color evokes a sense of sanctuary and relaxation amid our busy, always-on lives. In name and color, this hue speaks to our desire to take a break, be present and recharge. It also crosses multiple design styles, ideal for working with traditional, modern, coastal and global décor.”
