Lighting has an essential role in any room’s design. It plays a huge part in how you experience a space and a successfully designed interior displays a mix of three basic types — ambient, task, and accent.
Table lamps are an example of task lighting, important for performing specific behaviors, from reading to homework. They come in every conceivable style and can create a focal point in a room. So for today’s Design Crush, I’ve chosen the sophisticated Arteriors Mariella Lamp, a stylish item that showcases the best of Portuguese artistry to provide form and function. This porcelain piece features crosshatch detailing with brown and blue accents that accent each hand detail and the lamp is 15.5 inches tall. It is topped with a round drum ivory microfiber shade lined to match, 17 inches wide. What do you think?

Your entryway is the first glimpse people will get of your home’s interior, and you want to make a statement. That’s one reason I love a beautiful table for the foyer, like my Design Crush today.
This transitional console designed by Michael Wolk for Allan Copley is a zebra wood top and black on oak base, with graceful curves and an elegant style. This is from the Bonita collection, which are modern, yet timeless in their style (you can get Bonita dining table, side table, coffee table, and nightstand, too). What do you think?

One of the most luxurious parts of a bathroom cab be the tub, particularly if its a spa soaking bathtub. I love to include one, if possible, in bathroom remodels.
A sculptural white acrylic soaking bathtub from AKDY is my choice for this week’s Design Crush. Doesn’t it make you want to relax with a glass of wine and a long soak? This tub holds 70 gallons of water and its elegant egg-shaped design is made to contour your body and give you the perfect position to relax from a long day. Five self-leveling adjustable legs are kept hidden away under the bathtub to maintain a sleek look. What do you think?

I love furniture with a sculptural element and my Design Crush this week offers just that. The Revo Midcentury Modern Dresser offers unforgettable style that’s elegant and functional.
This four-drawer console chest from Butler Specialty Company is alluringly finished in dark caramel and the four-corner tapered post frame exquisitely supports the drawers and their contents. Crafted from gmelina wood, this dresser has finely tailored and textured white leather-and-chrome handlebar drawer pulls. Open them to reveal English dovetail construction with smooth maple interiors.
This piece measures 40 inches wide by 16 inches deep by 34 inches high and would look marvelous in a soft contemporary, transitional, or vintage aesthetic. What do you think? How would you use this midcentury modern dresser?

My Design Crush this week will have you sitting pretty in chic comfort.
The Sadowa Side Chair offers a classic style with a contemporary twist — check out those legs! It’s a casual-modern look that’s totally transitional. Each chair is upholstered in one of 15 fabrics and six nail designs, or one of 18 leathers, hand-applied by craftspeople at manufacturer Theodore Alexander. The wood finished pictured is NoDa Ebony, the darker of two finishes available for the chair.
I think the Sadowa Side Chair would look marvelous in a dining room like this or this, something with a transitional aesthetic. The clean, strong lines of the chair would also work in a more contemporary room, or a more traditional one. It’s a versatile design, for sure. What do you think? How would you use this chair?

For this week’s Design Crush, I’ve found a sleek brass chandelier that will take your breath away with its simple, yet dramatic, aesthetics.
The Apollinaire chandelier from Jonathan Browning Studios is machined by hand from solid brass, custom-made for each home. It is also hand polished and patina’d and the lead crystal shades are turned and polished by hand. It is pictured above in oil rubbed and lite antique bronze. This one-of-a-kind contemporary chandelier is also available in polished nickel and satin nickel and measures 72 inches OAH from the ceiling point of attachment to the bottom of the chandelier, 60 inches wide, and 11.5 inches in diameter (custom drop lengths can be specified, too).
The drops and crystal shades create a delicate, modern aesthetic with geometric perfection. The Apollinaire chandelier would look marvelous in a contemporary or transitional interior design plan, or even a more industrial look. It’s a versatile piece! What do you think?

Lighting for any room should come from multiple sources. One great source for task lighting is a table lamp. With so many options — and there are SO MANY OPTIONS — how do you pick?
I start by considering the design aesthetic for the room and look for a lamp or lamps that fit the style. This week’s Design Crush is a more contemporary or transitional style, the Pera table lamp from 1st Avenue. It would offer a sculptural element to a living area or home office with a carved wood base, rich espresso finish, brushed nickel highlights, and unusual oval cut-out. A cream linen shade completes the look and produces a warm, ambient glow when illuminated and its rectangular shape contrasts nicely with the curves of the lamp base.

I love the trend of the last couple of years toward using more natural elements in design. Agate rocks are everywhere and they are gorgeous, especially when polished to a high sheen and paired with gold or silver-colored metals. The look is truly eye-catching.
This week, my Design Crush is the Quinn Agate Two-tier Coffee Table from Michael Studios. Isn’t it lovely? This made-to-order furniture piece is customizable with arms or without, with multiple tiers and finishes available and measures approximately 22-by-19 inches. Each agate top is hand selected and positioned to float effortlessly on a modern, thin metal base. This collection piece is signed by the artist, Katherine Wildt O’Brien, who founded the company in 2008. Agate is believed to be a healing stone, best known for its beautiful striations and rich color. I like that each agate slab is set so the natural edge is exposed — I think that emphasizes its natural beauty. What do you think?

For this week’s Design Crush, I’ve got my eyes on the Whisper Leather Chandelier, a stunning piece with a great story.
Created by Ngala Trading Company, these gorgeous chandeliers were created in response to the dearth of quality, affordable African design being marketed and distributed in the US. Their products are organic and made by hand in South Africa using a variety of skulls and game skins, as well as exotic indigenous materials such as feathers, ostrich eggs, leather, porcupine quills, suede, horns, and ostrich shins. This creates lighting, furniture, and decor that is not only functional, but statement pieces in their own right. Also important, their business practices are ethical and they operate a sustainable model of sourcing and manufacturing.
But the bottom line for a design crush is the design. And wow! The Whisper Leather Chandelier is handmade with varying lengths of stripped leather, creating layers of movement and texture. The ambient light from within the fixture emerges into the room in a soft glow, and is incredible when viewed from below. What do you think?

An entryway is one of your first chances to create swoon-worthy design in your home. The front door is like the front cover of a book, and your entryway design is your first page. Why not make it bold and memorable? I certainly advocate for that approach!
For this week’s Design Crush, I’m featuring the unforgettable Asquith Console by 1st Avenue. This intricate piece of furniture could actually work in an entryway, living room, or dining room as a sideboard. I appreciate its intricate design elements, from the traditional bun feet to its raised detailing and nailhead accents around the front. This console table features three drawers and English dovetail joints. It measures 64.25 inches wide, 14.5 inches deep and 34.5 inches high and weighs 86 pounds, making it a good size to anchor a space. What do you think?
