Transitional interior design is all about the clean-lined aesthetic of soft contemporary with some more traditional elements to reveal a highly livable — and always beautiful — look.
Last week, I shared part of my project reveal, bespoke, bright transitional design in a Dallas home renovation. This week, part two. My team and I were called in to refresh a dull and dated ranch-style house. The owner is a widow who has made many wonderful memories there but wasn’t thrilled with the floorplan or older interior vibe. She loves to cook and entertain, especially family, and the house just wasn’t cutting it! This was particularly true of the kitchen, a closed-off galley space without good flow or function (see my “before” photos below for proof!).
Our solution? Take down the wall between the living room and kitchen and build a peninsula with seating and storage on both sides. We took some square footage from her oversized laundry room to create a butler’s pantry and the new kitchen is so much more conducive to hosting gatherings and being able to visit with people in the living room while preparing meals.
One aspect of this design stands out in my mind and I’m proud of our solution to a vexing problem. The family room ceiling is vaulted, so when we took out the wall dividing it from the kitchen, we had a real problem butting in a vent. Had we used a standard one that hung from the ceiling, it would have been off center. So with research and diligence, we found a ceiling vent from Best Hoods that draws up smoke and odors amazingly well — props to Thaddeus from Thaddeus Drew Remodeling who scouted the hood and did a wonderful job during this project.

The oversized breakfast bar created seating for four. In the ceiling, you can see the overhead vent hood, which works beautifully. Such great technology! The fabric on the bar chairs is from Crypton and is stain-, odor-, and moisture-resistant.

Storage is the name of the game in this Dallas kitchen redesign! The owner wanted more of it everywhere and we delivered. The countertops are quartz, which I love for durability and look.

Even with a bay window, the old kitchen was dark. No more! This breakfast area shows how sophisticated and bright the space has become. That beautiful light fixture is from Arteriors Dallas. The table is by Stanley Furniture, the chairs are by Vanguard, and the centerpiece bowl is from Global Views.

The Presidio encaustic tile backsplash carries into this built-in cabinetry to the right of the breakfast table. We took about two to three feet from the oversized laundry room next to the kitchen to create this area.

The old kitchen was cramped and dark with limited seating.

That wallpaper and window dressing had to go!

Sometimes a home office looks like an afterthought. Not the case here! We put a lot of care into carrying transitional interior design into this room to make it both functional and fabulous.
In the psychology of color, blue colors tend to be soothing, like other earth colors — this is the color of the sky. Blues make people feel calm. Darker blue, like this are also linked to creativity and intelligence. For a home office, this will keep tempers steady, mood happy, and thinking sharp.
Throughout the house, we’ve used custom upholstered furnishings to create a luxury look. In the office, we did a sitting area with comfortable chair and side table.
Project Reveal: Bespoke and Bright Transitional Design | Dallas Interior Designer | Barbara Gilbert Interiors

In the psychology of color, the deeper the hue, the great the effect. This saturated blue will make the office a relaxing space for our homeowner. That sunburst mirror is designed by Global Views.

The wall art is from Global Views.

Custom upholstery graces this club chair from Vanguard in the home office. Custom art is from La Montage and the side table is designed by Bernhardt Furniture Company.

Now onto the master bedroom, one of the most relaxing and posh spots in the house. This blue will not only promote relaxation, but also calm and clarity. Blue slows heart rate and breathing, perfect to promote meditation or relaxation.
In this room, we mixed several patterns, something that makes a lot of people break out in a cold sweat when they try to do it themselves. With consideration of pattern scale, saturation, and personality, we made it look cohesive and complementary.
A problem we encountered in this room was a large window in the middle of the wall behind the bed. We took fabric and had it “paper-backed” so it could be hung like wallpaper, an option not many people know about. Our window treatment fabricator made a custom shade and matched its pattern layout perfectly with the wall’s fabric. Now when the shade is pulled down you can’t even tell there is a window at all!
Project Reveal: Bespoke and Bright Transitional Design | Dallas Interior Designer | Barbara Gilbert Interiors

The bedroom used to be so dark (see the photo below). Now it feels like a peaceful retreat. What appears to be wallpaper behind the bed is actually fabric from Robert Allen. For the walls, we had it paper-backed and the Roman shades are custom. The bed linens are customized from different vendors.

Using blue in the bedroom promotes serenity and relaxation. The light fixture is from Made Goods and fabric on the left window is by Kravet.

The master bathroom redesign created a soothing spa-like room for a client who loves to take long, hot baths. As you can see from the “before” photo below, it just looked blah. But the cabinets were in great shape and provided plenty of storage so we repainted them a light cream color, put on new pulls and knobs, and installed recessed lights to brighten up the whole room.
The corner jetted tub was also in great condition, so we kept that and redid the tile surround in a soothing light blue glass tile. On the wall leading up to the tub, you can really see the large-format beige tile we chose for other areas. We also totally reimagined the shower, adding a new glass enclosure, tile, and fixtures to create a flawless, serene look.
New marble countertops, contemporary light fixtures, art prints with mother of pearl frames, and a sliding barn door for the entrance finished off the look.

We kept the cabinets in this master bathroom renovation, repainting them a cream color and using a sliding door for its entrance.

We kept corner jetted tub and retiled the surround and wall leading up to it. The walk-in shower got a new glass enclosure and tile, as well as fixtures.

Good lighting is important everywhere, but especially in the bathroom!

hello sourAV

Dream bedroom design is one of my favorite parts of being a Dallas interior designer. I enjoy creating stylish and relaxing retreats for my clients, tailored for their unique personalities and arranged beautifully. This is such a personal part of a home’s interior design — people want a room that exudes privacy and comfort, giving a sense of escape from a hectic world.
I’ve chosen four bedrooms from my design portfolio I think fit the bill as wonderful and stylish escapes and what makes them so. I hope you enjoy!

Serene and green

Dream Bedroom Designs We Love and Why | Interior Design Dallas | Barbara Gilbert Interiors
Green is an excellent color for bedroom design. As related to the psychology of color, green creates a feeling of balance, calm, and harmony, especially in less saturated shades. I chose a light green wallpaper with beige medallions as a backdrop for this dream bedroom, which is anchored by a cream upholstered bed and a leather-and-fabric bench at its foot. Mirrored side tables offer a touch of sophistication and a sitting area by the windows offers a cozy spot to unwind.

Fun and funky

Dream Bedroom Designs We Love and Why | Interior Design Dallas | Barbara Gilbert Interiors
I designed this ‘tween bedroom for a special 11-year-old lady who knows what she likes, and color is one of them, especially purple. One essential part of the design process was creating a room that was not too babyish, and not too grown up, either. The result speaks for itself: fun and funky, but with enough “mature” style aspects to make it something that will endure into her college years.

Composed and curated

Dream Bedroom Designs We Love and Why | Interior Design Dallas | Barbara Gilbert Interiors
This is the master for an eco-friendly house I designed and I chose soothing shades of green as the backdrop for the room, a color you can see continued in the adjoining bath. As the room has hardwoods, I placed a contemporary area rug beneath the upholstered bed, which has a clean, tailored look, even with multiple pillows. Custom window treatments soften the space, as does a nearby arm chair and a tufted bench at the end of the bed. This space is appealing and stylish with a lot of elegant layers.

Luxe and lovely

Dream Bedroom Designs We Love and Why | Interior Design Dallas | Barbara Gilbert Interiors
A master bedroom should be a serene space that invites relaxation and rejuvenation. Working with my color-loving clients, we envisioned a space with hues of purple, silver, and gray. Multiple seating areas take the comfort level to the next level! The result is an elegant, curated dream bedroom that works both functionally and aesthetically, with pops of color that aren’t too saturated or intense. I would love to end my day here.

Purple is a powerful color. Many people shy away from it when they’re thinking of bedroom design ideas, believing it’s too bold. But in my experience, purple makes an excellent hue for bedrooms, whether the intensity is saturated or more pastel.
I’ve chosen different shades of purple for several bedrooms I’ve designed recently. I love the results, and so do my clients! From a colorful “tween” bedroom with style that endures, to an elegant and serene master bedroom, purple was the star of my color palette.
How can you make purple work in your own bedroom design ideas? Read on to find out!
Bedroom Design Ideas: The Power of Purple | Interior Design Dallas | Barbara Gilbert Interiors
I’m passionate about color, especially the psychology of color and how it affects us through interior design. So let’s break it down.
Chromatically speaking, purple is the mix of energetic red and calm blue. It combines these two and the resulting color creates a calming effect on the mood, a great choice for a room where you sleep. Purple can also provide a bit of uplift and creative surge, which makes it a great choice for the mornings, when you need to get up and be inspired to start your day.

Purple is the color of imagination and wisdom, associated with mystery, passion, and luxury. Historically, it was identified with royalty. That’s because the dye used to create purple was rare and hugely expensive — only the elite, like kings and queens, could afford it.
It still carries the aura of luxury for most people on a subconscious level. A purple bedroom can inspire feelings of contentment and satisfaction because of this.

Creating a color palette with purple is a fun exercise. I recommend starting a Pinterest board or Houzz ideabook with purple bedroom design ideas that inspire you. Once you’ve gathered a bunch of pictures, look for the commonalities. Are you leaning toward purple as an accent color? Shades of purple throughout? Base your color palette on what you like (and be sure to read 6 Ways to Use Color to Create a Home You Love for more guidance).
When you start planning your bedroom, you might choose one design element as your jumping off point, like a wallpaper with purple. Or maybe it’s a piece of art. It could even be a throw pillow. Whatever you choose, take a sample with you when you shop for furniture and accents so you can make sure other elements work with those particular shades.
The really fun part comes when you start putting the elements together in your space. This can be done during a weekend, or bit by bit over time. Once you’ve completed your room, congratulate yourself for a job well done!
I’d love to see your results and how you used purple in your bedroom or other rooms — please share them with us on Facebook, Pinterest, or Instagram (be sure to tag @bgidesigner)!

hello sourAV

I recently had the pleasure of designing a tween bedroom for a special young lady. She is an 11-year-old who knows exactly what she likes and her favorite color is purple.
One essential part of the design process was creating a room that was not too babyish, and not too grown up, either. We wanted to create style that would endure well into her college years.
tween bedroom
With that in mind, we got to work on her new tween bedroom. First, we had her create Houzz ideabooks with examples of items she likes. From there, we were able to get a lot of inspiration. We didn’t want to make the bedroom too purple, since it is such a saturated, bold color. So we started with her new duvet cover, which has lots of pretty colors. We drew from there for the color palette. The Euro shams and roll pillow are custom made for her. At the foot of the bed, we chose C.R. Laine ottomans.
The artwork is another custom part of the room, a perfect place to pull the colors of the room together. The purple striped wall is a bold choice for this color-loving young lady. It is a wallpaper by JF Fabrics.
tween bedroom tween bedroom
On the nightstands, we made another bold choice: turquoise lamps by Robert Abbey. We all love the unusual shape and bright color. She needs lots of light for studying and having fun, so the ceiling fan could not be the only source of light.
Any tween needs lots of storage, so we built in a wall of white cabinets and drawers. The built-ins include glass-front cabinets and a nook for displaying fun design items.
tween bedroom tween bedroom
Finally, one of the most important elements of the room is the desk, where she will study. We chose to place it by the window for natural light, and put an orchid for some extra beauty.
This was a perfect area to give her a chic design element—the Vanguard desk with chrome legs is sleek and stylish. She can bring this with her to college and into her first apartment. It will age with her. For the chair, which is also from Vanguard, we wanted more color, so we chose material from JF Fabrics. The purple, magenta, and tan add another wow factor to the room.

The final result is a fun, festive tween bedroom that functions beautifully. Our young client was thrilled with the result and said she can’t wait to show it off to her friends. That’s high praise, indeed.

hello sourAV

Can you blend rustic charm with contemporary design? Absolutely! And reflecting this unique union was the guiding principle in our latest project – a rustic contemporary design home built in Celina, Texas.
Our design was inspired by Celina’s own duality. The small city sits at the intersection of a State highway and a farm to market road. Corn-lined roads usher you into town, and high school football is still king. In fact, Celina High School has one of the most successful football programs in the all of Texas, and that’s saying something!
But Celina also sits just north of the bustling Dallas Metroplex and the Dallas North Tollway, adding modern convenience to its rural appeal. The area is known as the “Golden Corridor,” and Celina’s housing market is booming. It was important for our design to reflect this balance, and a rustic contemporary design was the perfect fit!

The Exterior

Rustic Contemporary Design
Natural lighting and elements are prominently featured in the design. Expansive windows make the most of the home’s beautiful surroundings, and create a continuous flow from the outside in. A stone facade, clean lines and light-dark contrast set the tone for interior finishes.

The Kitchen

Rustic Contemporary Design
The heart of the home opens to the living room, creating a spacious area for friends and family to gather. Dekton countertops offer a seamless surface, and beauty that matches function. The sophisticated blend of raw materials is fireproof and non-porous, with virtually zero water absorption.
X-mullion white cabinetry and opulent Duraglass accent tiles bring visual interest and light to the space. A custom-designed, two-part island system offers the ultimate in function and flexibility. The system includes one stationary section and one mobile section mounted on casters, which can serve as a serving or prep area, breakfast bar or craft table.

The Living Room

Rustic Contemporary Design
A floating hearth with dark porcelain tile surround serves as the focal point of the living room which is bathed in natural light. Dark faux ceiling beams and casings match the tone of the porcelain tile, and are in stark contrast to room’s light finishes.

The Staircase

Rustic Contemporary Design
A modern staircase with metal and glass railing greets visitors to the home and can be viewed from the majority of the house. At its pinnacle, a contemporary chandelier descends from a double vaulted ceiling through faux beams illuminated with LED uplighting.

The Master Bathroom

Rustic Contemporary Design
In the master bedroom, an ensuite spa-inspired bathroom features a freestanding tub, frameless glass shower and porcelain flooring in a herringbone pattern. Dekton countertops, polished chrome hardware and glass accent tile complete the look.

Does durable luxury exist? Absolutely! Just because you have kids and pets doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style. Advances in technology have made many of today’s luxurious fabrics both washable and durable. And glamorous accents have always had the power to transform any space.
We recently worked with a wonderful family of four, plus two lovable golden retrievers, to create a luxurious master bedroom where everyone can relax in style. Our solution for luxurious, but family-friendly: a color palette of warm, soft grays and spa-like greens, washable fabrics and chic accents.

Luxurious Master Bedroom

luxurious master bedroom
Warm, soft grays, spa-like greens and crisp whites create a fresh, tranquil retreat. The large bench at the end of the bed provides seating, and is covered in a faux leather for durability. The plush bedding offers the best of both worlds: practical luxury. Made from a washable cotton velvet, the bedding can even be thrown in the wash at home!
luxurious master bedroom
A wall covering with textured metallic beads on a light green background provides the perfect backdrop for the room’s stylish furnishings. The king size bed is upholstered in a neutral, woven fabric, and features nailhead trim. Mirrored front nightstands and metallic lamps add glamour.
luxurious master bedroom
A club chair and ottoman, upholstered in a pale shade of platinum, pair for the perfect spot for reading or watching television. Chic accents, like a champagne metallic floor lamp and gray shagreen side table, offer function and flair to the luxurious master bedroom.

A detailed image shows the elegant crackle finish of the floor lamp and the contemporary lattice pattern of the faux silk drapery.
Everyone in the family is thrilled with their new luxurious master bedroom, even the golden retrievers! And we couldn’t be happier for them.

hello sourAV

You often visit faraway places in your dreams, but why limit yourself to rare occasions when your home’s design can whisk you away every day? Creating a relaxing master bedroom that speaks to your senses is one of the best and most enduring ways to treat yourself.
We were recently asked to lighten and freshen up a Moroccan-styled master bedroom and the details made all the difference. Here’s the transformation!
Moroccan Bedroom before
The room already had a good foundation with many beautiful pieces, but our client desired a brighter and more cheerful master retreat.
Moroccan Bedroom
The room’s new color palette was inspired by a handmade ceiling panel that included a rich jade green. This elegant green hue, combined with a vibrant chartreuse, sets the tone for the room. Custom bedding was designed using fabrics in both colors with a variety of textures and patterns. A pale cream-colored duvet cover with jade trim provides the perfect backdrop for the bold colors.
Moraccan bed
A custom upholstered bench at the foot of the bed completes the bedding ensemble and offers a spot to sit while dressing. The black wood finish also provides contrast in the room’s furnishings.
mirrored nightstands
Dark nightstands were replaced with white, mirrored-front pieces to reflect light and brighten the space. The room’s existing lamp bases were reused, but the shades were replaced with lighter, more simplified versions. These details alone made a huge difference in the mood created.
Moroccan bedroom
Lastly, a vibrant painting paired with equally colorful accessories finished the room by further adding color and another form of texture.
Our client is thrilled with the transformation and we couldn’t be happier!

Bedroom Interior Design Ideas

When it comes to choosing bedding for a client’s home, there are numerous details that come into play. In truth, only the designer and workroom that creates the bedding know how much time and effort goes into the process, but here’s a taste of what’s involved.

Bedroom Interior Design – Beginning the custom bedding process.

The first step in creating custom bedding is determining the client’s style and needs. Preferred colors, patterns and finishes are all considered. For example, are extravagant trims desired or a less complicated design, such as self welts and fabric flange which are more popular today.

Bedroom Interior Design – How is the fabric selected?

Blue Bedroom
Next, the fabric must be selected while considering the room’s other elements and client’s desires. In the case above, we absolutely fell in love with the coverlet fabric and it became our source of inspiration. Usually, fabrics for the duvet cover, shams, toss pillows and dust ruffle are selected from several different companies in order to create the perfect palette. And patterns at different scales as well as solids are selected to create a pleasing ensemble for your bedroom interior design project.

Bedroom Interior Design – Creating the design.

After selecting the fabrics, the design of the actual bedding begins! We team up with the workroom to lay everything out and select final trims keeping in mind that simple, transitional design is timeless.
In a recent design, we used the solid fabrics to create trims and flange on the pillows and coverlet edge while selecting one very unique trim for a small detail on the throw pillows. Because flange tends to fall over when on pillows, we had crinoline put inside the flange to prevent this. Just a small detail that makes a huge difference!
Of course, a room’s existing décor and furnishings are a factor in the design. In the project below, the chair, bench, window treatments and canopy were all already present, and we were able to find fabrics for the bedding that correlated perfectly!
Bedroom with Canopy
Now that the design and fabrics have been selected, we can order all the needed materials. Unfortunately, back orders due to shortages in stock can occur and another fabric must be selected. This is always frustrating since we have already found the perfect fabric for the project! But, there is always a good alternative.

Dallas Interior Design Team… Off to the workroom!

Once the workroom receives all the materials, the work begins right away. And once done, the final product is always beautiful and something the client can call uniquely theirs!
white and gray bedding
I have to say, working on the projects pictured above made me have quite a bit of bedding envy!

There are seven principles of design. And all seven have to be incorporated into a room to make it flow. And guess what? Chances are your most comforting space – the place you feel most at ease – flows well and has colors that fit your personality. We all tend to shy away from harsh fluorescent lighting. It hurts the eyes and inhibits your mind. Yet some office spaces still use it!

For most people, the master bedroom is one of the most important rooms in the house. It’s where we retreat at the end of the day: to relax and rejuvenate from all the day’s stressors and responsibilities. And that’s exactly why it’s essential that the room’s decor reflects the needs and personalities of those who reside in it.
We recently featured a grand living room we designed for clients desiring an elegant and family-friendly home. We were also fortunate enough to design their master retreat and, once again, luxury and practicality were the ultimate goals.
