Interior Design Planning – Lights, Camera, Adjust!

Interior Design Planning

Photo shoots are bittersweet. We love capturing the completed look of an interior design plan, but it also means a project is over. And the only thing we get more attached to than our interior designs is our clients!
We’ve also learned that photo shoots themselves aren’t all glamour and pizzazz. They’re an intricately planned, constantly changing, all day affair. Our respect for photographers and preparation time for a shoot have both grown exponentially over the years!
Before the day of the shoot even arrives, we must decide the interior design shots we want taken and share this information with the photographer so he can plan accordingly. Any props or accessories needed for the shoot must also be planned, acquired or purchased.

The day of the photo shoot begins with unpacking and setting up equipment. Next, it’s time to get the room interior design “magazine” ready. This means removing all personal items like photographs or collectibles, and even appliances if the room is a kitchen.
Of course, the clients approve these edits beforehand and we return the room to its prior appearance after shooting. “Before” pictures are taken of the room so we can return all items to their proper place once the shoot is over.

The room is then staged with props and accessories to replace any personal items removed. Props typically include fresh flowers, plants, or fruit – all of which have been preplanned and brought to the shoot.

The lighting is then painstakingly adjusted, the camera placed and the shot previewed. Then the other adjustments begin!
Accessories must often be rearranged, angles fine-tuned, pillows fluffed, blinds opened or closed and furniture shifted ever so slightly. Finally, the shot is taken and scrutinized again for any further needed adjustments to the interior design.

Once we’re all satisfied with the shot, it’s time to begin staging the next one and the entire process repeats itself. In the end, we always leave a photo shoot feeling the same way – proud, happy and exhausted!
