Custom Furniture Trend Alert: Velvet Fabric

If you’ve been paying attention to home design trends for the last year or so, I’ll bet velvet furniture has caught your eye. This distinctive fabric is showing up in bold ways on sofas and chairs of almost every style.
I’m seeing this home design trend mostly in contemporary and transitional furniture, but more traditional pieces are being adorned with this rich fabric, too. And it’s not just in houses — office interior design is catching onto this trend, too, which makes for some seriously comfy and chic work spaces.

The Cyan Design Prince Valiant contemporary chair in blue velvet.

Long associated with royalty and luxury, velvet is in fact a very old type of fabric. It was first introduced in the eighth century in the Middle East. Today, it can be made from synthetic or natural fibers and the short, dense pile of this woven, tufted fabric is what gives it the luxe and distinctive feel.
One beautiful example is the Cyan Design Prince Valiant chair, pictured above, in blue velvet. Its clean lines create an almost architectural look and this velvet chair would look marvelous in a contemporary or transitional design scheme.

Another option for incorporating velvet into your home is ordering custom furniture and and choosing the exact fabric you want. That’s where a professional interior designer comes in! We can help our clients discern exactly what they like about the this home design trend and what kind of custom furniture would help them best realize their aesthetic.
I encourage clients to create online inspiration boards with photos of what they like – and don’t. From those boards, my team and I can learn a lot. When combined with our consultations and detailed questionnaires, we get a complete look at your interior design dreams.
