Continuing on our top interior design trends for 2026, here is Part 2! Let us know what you think. Did we miss anything you’re seeing or would like to see?

STATEMENT LIGHTING AND SCULPTURAL DETAILS

Lighting is no longer purely functional– it’s architectural.

  • Sculptural pendants, oversized fixtures and layered lighting serve as visual anchors.
  • Decorative metalwork, fringes, and tactile materials add artistic detail.
  • Use a dramatic fixture in an unexpected place and play with varied heights.

PAINTERLY, HAND-CRAFTED TILE AND MOSAICS

  • Hand painted and artisan tile designs (floral, graphic, bespoke pattern)
  • Replacing mass-produced geometric tiles
  • When utilized correctly, the tile itself becomes the artwork.
  • There is also a spike in mosaic tile use– inspired by mid century and global references– adding color, craft and cultural rhythm to rooms.

DEEP, MOODY & DRAMATIC PALETTES- EMOTIONAL COLOR PAIRINGS

Beyond earthy neutrals, rich jewel tones- like burgundy, ochre, plum, aubergine, and smokey blues– are being embraced as new neutrals, adding character and intimacy to spaces.

  • Play with high-contrast color on trim and architectural details to add subtle drama
  • Nature-inspired but vivid hues– such as terracotta, mossy green, oceanic blue, and deep plum– are emerging palettes that are both grounded and energizing

LAYOUT, USE AND SPATIAL ZONES

While open concepts aren’t disappearing, designers are creating intentional zones for dining, working, gathering, and meditation, often using furniture placement or lighting rather than walls.

  • Defined zones over open floor plan
  • Dedicated quiet spaces- reading nooks, meditation corners, creative desks– are emerging as must-have features that support daily wellness and mental reset.
  • Outdoor living areas are being designed as intentional extensions of 2026 design leans toward warmth over stark minimalism, nature-inspired color and materials, comfort and personal expression, curves and textures as primary actors, and sustainability and authenticity over superficial trends. This in turn combines modern technology with vintage beauty.

PERSONALIZED AND STORY-DRIVEN INTERIORS

Homes are becoming unique expressions of the people who live in them. Mix vintage items with contemporary pieces for a curated, collected feel.

  • Lived in, layered spaces that include antiques, repurposed pieces, and artwork tell a story.
  • Textile wall hangings, pattern play, and bold tile work add narrative and texture.
  • Wallpaper, patterned fabrics, and bespoke elements replace generic surfaces.

As design moves forward in 2026, luxury is no longer defined by excess but by atmosphere—rich materials, expressive forms, and curated comfort, where innovation and heritage coexist in spaces designed to feel both elevated and enduring.

Building on the design movements of 2025, certain trends are evolving while others remain. With that being said, here are interior design trends we expect to define 2026.

Warmer lighting

Homes are becoming warmer, softer, and more atmospheric, especially with lighting choices.

  • Warm & comfortable versus cold & stark
  • Soft ambient lighting takes precedence over bright, overhead illumination.
  • Shaded table lamps, floor lamps, sconces, and subtle uplighting are layered to create mood and more interest.

Natural Materials & Textures

Natural materials like wood, Capiz shell, linen, and woven textures continue to be a defining trend, but in 2026 there is a focus on the organic and tactile finish. Instead of polished or overly refined finishes, designers are leaning into more organic, tactile expressions. Embracing visible grain, irregular textures, and subtle imperfections that make spaces feel layered, lived-in, and authentic.

Trim & Architectural Details

The architecture of a space is the main starting point of a design, allowing you to do as little or as much as you would like. To truly maximize a design, every area of a room should be intentional.

  • Can add Character to overlooked areas
  • Adds depth, detail, and visual interest without overwhelming the space
  • Creates a simple, but timeless feel to the room
  • Architectural details, and accent trim prove that small additions can still make a significant impact

Color Drenching

By saturating a space in a single hue, you can craft a room that feels immersive, cohesive, and emotionally grounded. You can turn any room into a sophisticated, tonal, and deeply personal space.

  • Enhances mood by allowing color to set the emotional tone of a room
  • Highlights architectural details by letting shadows and texture do the work
  • Feels modern yet timeless when executed with soft, muted, or nature-inspired hues
  • Creates a seamless, enveloping look that makes spaces feel thoughtfully curated

Using the “Fifth Wall”

Designers are giving renewed attention to the fifth wall—the ceiling. Transforming it from an afterthought into a main focal point. As interiors evolve more, ceilings are being used to add depth, warmth, and personality. Whether subtle or bold, treating the ceiling as part of the overall design creates more immersive, thoughtfully finished spaces.

  • Creates a big impact when utilized
  • Helps create zones in an open concept layout
  • Adds visual interest and dimension without taking up floor space
  • Enhances mood and ambiance, especially when paired with color drenching
  • Can be used to visually enlarge the space, or to create a more cozy atmosphere

As the saying goes, “The future of medicine is in the home.” Interior design plays a powerful role in that future, and here’s why:

Timeless Design for Longevity – Neuroaesthetics and other ways to accomplish this

Longevity- focused interiors prioritize what lasts— emotionally, physically, and environmentally.

  • Does not chase trends
  • Relies on thoughtful spatial planning and proportions, enduring materials that stand the test of time, and the adaptation to how we live over decades.
  • Intentional design choices often save money long-term by reducing the need for constant updates and replacements.

See more details from this McKinney project HERE!

Neuroaesthetics: How Design Shapes the Brain

This is how our brain responds to our environment. Color, light, scale, texture, and spatial flow all influence stress levels, focus, and emotional well-being.

When design supports the nervous system, a home feels calming, grounding, and restorative– not overstimulating or chaotic.

  • Visual simplicity and balance
  • Furniture scaled for ease of use and comfort
  • Clear circulation and carefully- considered layouts
  • Places of Prospect and Refuge
  • Spaces that invite pause, rest, and connection.

Color Choices That Support Well- Being

  • Color is the most powerful tool in neuroaesthetic design.
  • Earth tones, soft neutrals, and nature- inspired hues help regulate the nervous system and create a sense of security and ease.
  • Lean into layered, timeless colors that age beautifully and support emotional balance.

See more details from this project HERE!

Biophilic Design: Inside and Out

The connection to nature– both visually and physically– is essential to human well-being.

  • Natural materials like wood, stone, and linen
  • Organic forms and textures
  • Indoor plants and living elements
  • Views to the outdoors and framed sight-lines

Even more powerful is bringing interior “homeyness” outside– designing outdoor spaces that feel just as inviting and intentional as indoor rooms.

See details for this project HERE!

Light, Circadian Rhythm, and Shade vs. Sunlight

Lighting has a direct impact on circadian rhythm, mood, and energy levels. Therefore, maximizing daylight and respecting the balances of shade and sunlight is essential.

  • Abundant natural light during the day
  • Soft, dimmable lighting in the evening
  • Warm-toned fixtures that encourage relaxation
  • Outdoor lighting that is low, ambient and intentional
  • Fire features: from fireplaces to outdoor firepits, fire creates warmth, presence and connection

See more details for this Santa Fe project HERE! (More photos below)

Sustainable Furniture as a Long-Term Investment

Sustainable design is not about disposable pieces. It is, however, about investing in furniture that lasts.

  • Ethically made, well-constructed, and designed to age gracefully
  • Choosing fewer, higher-quality pieces reduces waste and creates spaces that feel intentional over time.

Homes are becoming our sanctuaries, our wellness centers, and our creative hubs. By integrating the concepts of neuroaesthetics, biophilic design, thoughtful lighting, and sustainable choices, interior design becomes a tool for longevity– not just style.

Timeless interiors don’t shout. They support, restore, and endure.

hello sourAV

Many homeowners have beautiful houses, but often times they are missing out on the homeyness intentionally layered lighting brings.

Lighting is meant to be layered and creates ambiance for different settings. Relying on General lighting as your only source of light is an oversimplified lighting scheme and produces an unwelcoming environment. A house isn’t a home without the proper lighting! Let’s dig into the different residential lighting types, their function, and their locations.

See details of this project HERE!

General Lighting

  • “can” lighting
  • Creates a uniform illumination of light
  • Illuminates for function, not aesthetic
  • Important to space them to avoid spots
  • Causes shadows
  • Consider ceiling fan placement to avoid strobing effect if blades intersect light path
  • Direct light

See details of this project HERE!

Ambient Lighting

  • “architectural lighting”
  • Pairs with General lighting- controlling light temperature
  • Used to light a complete area
  • Illuminates primarily for function
  • Set with dimmers to adjust lighting levels- especially helpful during different times of the day
  • Creates drama
  • Indirect light

Mood Lighting

  • Often overlooked, but just as important as the General and Ambient lighting
  • Important for the overall look and feel of the room
  • Creates dramatic spreads of light that balance out the shadows of General lighting
  • Both style and function is of importance
  • Lighting type that is closest to the eye (diffuse bulb with a shade or filter to avoid glare)
  • Lower wattage, complements high wattage of General lighting
  • Too high of a wattage is hazardous due to the proximity of most fixtures’ shades
  • Lamp shade tips: Dark shade = moody, dramatic feel; Pale shade = allows as much light in; Silver/Gold Lined shades = ultimate illumination as it creates a reflective glow

See more details from this project HERE!

Task Lighting

  • Needs a higher wattage for tasks like cooking or working
  • Combine with ambient lighting to avoid eye strain from bright to dull areas
  • Examples are table lamps, floor lamps, front lit LED mirrors & even reading light sconces mounted beside a headboard!
  • Other examples are pendants over prep/cooking area in kitchen, underlit cabinets
  • Can also be seen in toe kick lighting or stair lighting to help guide someone through their home

See details for this project HERE!

Accent Lighting

  • Used to highlight certain features of a room
  • Examples are spotlights used to light artwork or any display pieces/sculptures
  • Without accent lighting, features could get lost in an un-illuminated pocket or shadow
  • Requires a higher wattage, like task lighting
  • Sometimes there is an overlap between Ambient and Accent lighting
  • Architectural Accent lighting is softer than Architectural Ambient lighting because it highlights textures and perimeters rather than a single object.

Lighting Types & locations

Chandeliers

A type of ambient lighting as it is dimmable and on a separate control as general

Typically used in foyer, family room, bedroom and sometimes bathroom.

Pendants

A type of task lighting. Can be used over kitchen island, dining tables, bedroom nightstands, bathroom vanities as well as bars.

Sconces

A type of mood or accent lighting as it can highlight certain features by wall washing or create a glowing effect. Seen on stair walls, dining rooms, bed walls, media rooms, hallways and exterior applications.

Table Lamp & Floor Lamp

A type of task lighting (used on a work desk, nightstand, side table) as well as mood lighting (more dependent on shade and how much light is omitted). Used in family rooms, bedrooms, and studies.

Up Lighting

Light is introduced to a room by bouncing off the ceiling and then reflects back into the room. Softer alternative to downlighting.

Down Lighting

Powerful form of light that highlights a specific piece or element. Needs to be balanced with ambient lighting as it casts intense shadows.

Wall Washing

Evenly illuminates a vertical space very delicately. Placed further away from the desired illuminated plane.

Wall Grazing

Light placed very close to the plane to intensely highlight its texture. Meant to create more dynamic shadows.

Hopefully this excerpt provided a good guideline for what residential types of lighting to include when considering updating or building your home. It is truly one of the most underutilized aspects of a space that makes the biggest impact!

hello sourAV

We are half way through 2025; can you believe it?! The world of interior design continues to embrace sustainability, functionality, and personal expression…and we couldn’t be happier about it! Here are the top 10 interior design trends for 2025 forecasted to define homes the rest of the year. Additionally, I’ve included my observations if we are seeing any of these trends in our local or Santa Fe projects…

1. Earthy Color Palettes: Shades like terracotta, warm taupe, and sage green dominate interiors, bringing nature-inspired serenity into homes.

  •  Of course, this is always incorporated in typical Santa Fe design but we really love updating the look with contemporary forms and clean lines. We’ve definitely been inspired in our Dallas projects from working in Santa Fe the last couple years!

See more of this project here!

2. Sustainable Materials: Expect a surge in eco-friendly materials like bamboo, recycled glass, and reclaimed wood for everything from furniture to flooring.

  • I think many of our manufacturers are looking for better ways to use sustainable materials and practices, down to the way they package their products. For example, they are substituting recyclable paper products for packing and being intentional in their crating for the least amount of waste. We try our best to source as many American made products as possible to cut down on importing and contributing to transporting from far away. This also helps with project lead times!

This vendor is working hard to pack their furniture in the most sustainable way; reducing waste and using recyclable materials. Check out our newest project here!

3. Textured Walls: From limewash finishes to 3D wall panels, textured walls are making a statement, adding depth and personality to living spaces.

  • Don’t get me started on lime wash paint! We have been implementing it into our projects the last year and love it! A natural easy paint finish that adds a nice layer to any space. Additionally, we are always on board with wall coverings or wallpaper! We do not have to treat all of the walls to help cut on cost.

Dimensional tile is still very present in our new build and remodel projects! Check out this all time favorite project in Heath, Texas here!

4. Wellness Spaces: Meditation corners and home gyms with spa-like elements are becoming essential for mental and physical well-being.

  • Post 2020, we are seeing clients really invest in these spaces at home and also the office! It’s so important to have a space to rewind and disconnect from the world so we are happy to include these spaces into new builds and renovations.
A spa retreat in your home with a built in sauna - A new standard in most of our projects.

Photography: Holger Obenaus A spa retreat in your home with a built in sauna – A new standard in most of our projects.

5. Vintage Revival: A blend of mid-century modern and 1970s-inspired pieces is back in style, bringing nostalgia with a contemporary twist.

  • Yes! And if you’re nervous to incorporate this vibe, start with smaller pieces. For example, a piece of art that you pull the colors from for throw pillows. And if you don’t know how to do it, you know where to go! 😉

6. Multifunctional Furniture: With homes becoming more dynamic, furniture that serves multiple purposes, such as sofa beds and extendable tables, is gaining popularity.

  • We love the aesthetic of a beautifully designed space, but there is something so wonderful about an efficient space too! With many people working part time from home, a space that can be flexible and serve two purposes is a nice option. Our team is always looking at how our clients use a space for the furniture layout!

Photography: Michael Hunter This island rolls apart to create a dining table that can be moved for your convenience! Check out this project here!

7. Biophilic Design: The integration of natural elements, from indoor plants to living green walls, continues to thrive in 2025.

  • Bringing the outside in is always going to be important for the health and wellbeing of the inhabitants. We are always focusing on bringing greenery inside, whether it is living or faux. Research shows even faux greenery has a positive mental effect.

Check out this new project here!

8. Statement Lighting: Bold, sculptural light fixtures are taking center stage, transforming rooms into modern art galleries.

  • Lighting is one of our favorite ways to change the space. Whether it’s a statement fixture or accent LED lighting.

The lighting in this powder room is simple but elegant. It makes a huge impact in this small space!

9. Curved Furniture: Soft, rounded silhouettes in sofas, chairs, and tables create a sense of comfort and fluidity.

  • Never underestimate the addition of curves! They soften up the space and make it more inviting, by breaking up the harsh edges.

The curvaceous chairs in this Fairview, Tx project are upholstered in a fun large pattern that only add to their character! See more of this project here!

10. Tech-Integrated Spaces: Smart home technology is seamlessly blending into design, with voice-activated systems and sleek, unobtrusive devices.

Whether you’re planning a complete renovation or subtle updates, these interior design trends for 2025 offer inspiration for creating a stylish and comfortable home in 2025. Which trend will you incorporate into your space?

a fully shelved wall with wallpaper insets behind a modern office with built in desk

Perhaps one of the most important rooms in your is now the home office or study. So much so, we’ve seen an incline of our clients requesting more than one. With so many people working from home post 2020, this is no surprise! To continue our “Must Have List” for each room in your home, we have the addition of a home office design. Take a look and see if you would add anything else. Also, we are interested to hear your thoughts and if you would omit anything from the list below?

  1. A view outside is essential to any home office design! Most do have this automatically, but it’s so important to have the biophilic design right out your window while you’re working for hours on end on your computer. We had to include it, especially as first on the list!
  2. Ample desk surface to spread out and work. There’s nothing worse than being crammed into your work space.
  3. Comfortable seating for a guest or two. You may even want a change of view for yourself and take a break in a comfy club chair.
  4. Soft rug or carpet under feet. This really is essential not only comfort but acoustics. The soft material helps damper those loud zoom calls!
  5. Variety in lighting. A home office or study can be a work horse in your home and used at all hours of the day. You must have a variety of lighting that can be adjusted to sun up and down. That’s why we use overhead lighting, desk and floor lamps, and accents in bookshelves as much as possible.
  6. Fun, inspirational artwork. If you like color here’s your chance! Add something happy or that means something to you. If you’re spending a lot of time in here, or looking at not so fun bills, you need something happy to glance at on your walls!
  7. A door! Because it just makes sense. No one wants to hear that zoom conference call while they’re relaxing across the house.

So there you have it, short and sweet! But, oh so important to include these elements in your home office design. Take a look at a couple more offices we completed for our clients below and click on any of them to see more!

See more of this Willow Bend Plano project HERE!

Well it’s here again….another “must have” list but this time for kitchen design! I’ll give you the same spill….Of course, we recommend that our clients make a wish list to start and then cut out what isn’t a priority. Because let’s face it…there’s always a budget that should be taken into consideration. This list has been compiled by staying on top of the industry trends and listening to what clients are asking for in their homes. (If you missed the MUST HAVE LIST for PRIMARY BATHROOMS check it out HERE!)

Take a look below and see what you think of our kitchen design must have list and wish list. Let us know if there’s anything else you would add! We would love to hear it!

KITCHEN DESIGN MUST HAVE LIST

  • LARGE ISLAND for ample work & serving surface. Seating of course is important here as well!
  • TRIANGLE RULE: Having the sink, cooktop and refrigerator located diagonally as fundamental tasks to minimize the distance and effort required for efficient work to be performed in the kitchen. Bonus if the dishwasher is located next to the sink! This is becoming increasingly difficult the larger the kitchens are getting! Having skilled and seasoned professionals that can help layout your kitchen is always helpful. This is something we love to figure out for our clients.
  • We prefer to have the SINK CENTRALLY LOCATED in the island so the user can communicate with guests and interact within the environment and not feel stuck on dish duty away from the excitement.
  • DESIGNATED COFFEE BAR, preferably located by the refrigerator! This can be constructed with doors that can recess into the cabinet. That way you have the flexibility to leave it open or have the ability to conceal the mess.
  • Avoid HARDWARE with extended ends! We’ve found that pant loops, pockets, sweaters, etc. get caught in the extended cabinet pulls during quick cooking situations & disrupts the flow of things. It’s hard enough to convince yourself to cook after a long day, don’t add another stressor to the list! Functionality trumps form this time. Plus, you don’t have to sacrifice style for this look.
  • Conceal trash/recycling within a PULL-OUT TRASH CABINET located in the island or by major prep zones.
  • Under-cabinets and toe kick LED LIGHTING.
  • ISLAND ACCENT LIGHTING – Statement pendants or linear pendant over island. This also helps illuminate the preparation area.
  • SPICE ROLL-OUTS, located by range or cooktop
  • UTENSIL ROLL-OUTS, located by range or cooktop
  • COOKIE SHEET STORAGE, located by ovens
  • POTS AND PANS STORAGE: Deep drawers for pots and pans, located by stove
  • CLEAN CABINET DOOR DESIGN: Shaker style cabinets with maximum 2” bead/trim or perhaps much smaller for a nice modern look. Many of our clients are growing tired of seeing thick shaker style so we are opting for something much like the kitchen in this post! Or slab doors without any detail for a modern look.
  • SOFT CLOSE CABINETRY in the kitchen is a must! We may not specify it in other areas but the kitchen being a high use area is highly preferred!
  • CONTRASTING MATERIALS on island and perimeter cabinetry: consider wood on the island (bonus for fluted insets) and painted perimeters.
  • Consider GLASS INSERTS on upper cabinetry to display items. BUT, we are doing away with the display uppers that become useless! Glass that is not transparent is preferred.
  • RANGE as opposed to just a cooktop and separate wall oven
  • DRAWERS over doors! They’re just more functional.

KITCHEN DESIGN WISH LIST

  • PREP KITCHEN or WORKING KITCHEN In the event that you have a prep kitchen in addition to the main kitchen, the triangle rule isn’t always necessary in the show kitchen as most of the preparation and will be performed in the prep kitchen. The triangle rule is especially great to use in a prep kitchen as the space tends to be a bit smaller and it works with circulation restraints. This room is becoming more and more important in homes that are 8,000 square feet and more.
  • SLAB BACKSPLASH for a more luxurious look and easier maintenance
  • PULL DOWN MECHANICS on upper cabinetry that is otherwise unaccessible. This is especially becoming important in kitchens with tall ceilings and cabinetry!
  • Incorporate a variety of materials: glass door fronts (reeded or smokey glass), fluted accents
  • PANEL READY APPLIANCES
  • ROLL OUT SHELVES: These are typically behind doors so that you do not have to reach into cabinets.
  • ICE MAKER
  • WARMING DRAWER
  • CHARGING STATION: Hidden is preferred! This is something our clients truly appreciate given the amount of cords we all deal with now a days.
  • A SECOND ISLAND: If there’s room!
  • MIXER LIFT: It’s always nice when you don’t have to move this heavy small appliance around.
  • WINE ROOM nearby that is becoming a show piece like the show kitchen. We are incorporating special features into this space so they are becoming important to those that entertain and do not necessarily drink themselves!

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

  • PULL OPEN DOORS: We have had clients opt for this and then go back to adding hardware due to the easier operation and less fingerprints!
  • CONTRAST ISLAND MATERIAL FROM PERIMETER. Consider hierarchy of materials. Busier one on island, quieter one on perimeter. Can continue the quieter one into the prep kitchen for a seamless transition?
  • SMALL APPLIANCE STORAGE: Consider where the ideal location for your small appliances would be and if concealed storage is an option.

Now if this seems like a long list, that’s because it is! A new kitchen design can be overwhelming and many of our clients come to us because they are just that: overwhelmed! Our clients want every detail to be considered and for their kitchen to work for them. That’s where BGI comes in! If you want to talk to us about your potential project check out the discovery call link below to speak to Amy and see if we can help.

I’ll look for you there,

hello sourAV

We spend the majority of our days indoors. Basically, you wake up at home, commute to your day job, maybe you run errands and shop afterwards, work out at the gym (in a perfect world) and end the day back at home. Maybe you walk the dog or water your plants. That’s a lot of time spent inside! Most of our time is spent interacting with our built environments. Therefore, have you thought about how does color psychology impact the interaction between people and the spaces they inhabit?

A professional interior designer will have the skillset to achieve the desired ambience of a room or space given its function. Everyones’ psychological needs are unique and specific to them. Whether it’s creating stress-reducing retreats, designing creative-boosting workplaces, or incorporating elements to support specific health goals, personalized design with color theory is changing the way we experience our homes and workplaces… and it all starts with color.

What is Color Psychology?

For example, the cooler and calming blues and greens can reduce stress and anxiety, while the warmer invigorating reds and yellows can energize and stimulate. As well as, in bedrooms, soothing pastels promote relaxation, while vibrant dining rooms encourage sociability. Interior designers use this knowledge to create spaces that coincide with the client’s desired emotional goals. This is merely scratching the surface of the wide variety of emotions color can evoke.

Here’s what you need to know about color and their inherent psychological impact on the mind and body in relation to interiors along with BGI projects to demonstrate:

Red

A fiery, warm color that creates a bold statement in a design scheme. Red aligns with power, sensuality and vigor. When the right shade of red is used, it can raise your energy levels so that you feel stimulated and invigorated. Since red has so much depth, it is typically used as an accent color in textiles and furniture. Like any color, red may seem overpowering if all walls are drenched in the hue, unless that is the desired look, of course. Keep in mind, the warmer the color, the more compact the space becomes.

Yellow

A sunny yellow is linked to feelings of happiness and optimism. Painting rooms that do not get a lot of natural sunlight, like bathrooms or laundry rooms, a nice and bright yellow hue will evoke a sense of cheerfulness in an otherwise dull room. Too bright of a yellow, however, can spark feelings of agitation, and too dull of a yellow can make you feel jealous or ill.

Orange

Orange is linked to confidence, playfulness, courageousness, and success. It is known to breed creativity. Its warmth energizes you, especially when the shade is as vibrant at the fruit. It is similar to yellow as they both promote a sense of welcoming and cheerfulness to visitors. This is why orange is seen so much in commercial settings, though it also works well in bathrooms just like yellow.

Green

Green relates back to nature and is popular in home design due to the desire to replicate the natural environment in our built world. Similarly, this color can feel rejuvenating, creates feeling of freshness, growth and vitality. Many people gravitate towards green as it is safe and secure.

  Blue

Blue, like green, is reminiscent of nature and promotes serenity, intelligence, and loyalty. It has a calm and soothing effect which is ideal when creating a peaceful home environment and is one of the top color choices from the general population.

Purple

Purple sparks passion and intensity and can elevate a room to create a sense of drama. It is a hybrid of warm and cool colors which can be heightened one way or the other depending on which shade you select. Simultaneously, purple can make a room feel lively and can make you feel lighthearted and playful.

Black

Although distinct, black connotes elegance, timelessness and power. Subsequently, when combined with white, the design will feel classic. However, when too much black is used, it will feel dramatic and even depressing.

White

White symbolizes goodness and purity. It is most commonly used on ceilings to avoid a heavy overhead feeling. White also makes rooms appear larger with its refreshed and clean qualities. These all work together to make you feel relaxed and at ease.

Color psychology doesn’t just revolve around interior design. In fact, it heavily applies to fine arts like photography and painting, advertising, branding and marketing as well as fashion and beauty… and so many other fields! Historically, we’ve seen how humans have used color to depicted the moods of the nation. Specifically, think of the dull grey and neutral tones used in World War II, the light pastels in the post World War and Civil Rights Movement, and the bright neons in the 1960’s. Subsequently, now that we spend so much time in our homes, it is important to be knowledgable of the meaning behind color in interior design. Therefore, similar to what we’ve seen in history, the ambience of our home dictates the mood of the inhabitants and visitors. Ask yourself: Do you or your company feel welcoming and peaceful or uninviting and chaotic?

When it comes to selecting furniture for your home, there are various factors to consider: style, comfort, durability, and maintenance. The most important factor in achieving the look, feel, and upkeep is the type of upholstery fabric you select for your furniture pieces….it’s very important to kid-proof your home…even if you do not have kids!  This is just for the peace of mind to enjoy your home instead of living in a museum!

What is performance fabric?

Performance fabric is a type of textile (or any fabric with the performance finish applied) that has been engineered and treated to have enhanced qualities like durability and stain resistance. This makes them great choices for high traffic areas or households with children and pets; in other words “kid-proof” your home. This type of fabric is specifically designed to endure the demands of everyday life and maintain its aesthetics over time. Performance fabrics are commonly used for upholstery like sectionals and chairs, but are also seen in draperies and accent pillows.

Synthetic Fibers & their performance qualities:

Polyester

A widely used synthetic fiber in performance fabrics.

Known for its strength, resilience, and resistance to wrinkles and shrinking.

Can be treated to provide stain resistance and moisture repellency, making them easy to clean and maintain.

Have good color retention, making them less prone to fading.

 Nylon

Strong and durable synthetic fiber that is also often used in performance fabrics.

Excellent abrasion resistance, making it a popular choice for high-traffic areas.

Known for their softness, smooth texture, and ability to hold color well, making them fade-resistant.

Can offer water and stain resistance, making them suitable for upholstery and outdoor use.

Olefin

Olefin, or polypropylene, is a synthetic fiber that is naturally moisture-resistant

Used in outdoor performance fabrics.

Resistant to fading, staining, and mildew, making them suitable for outdoor furniture and cushions.

Have a smooth texture and are often used in outdoor rugs, umbrellas, and patio furniture.

Acrylic

Synthetic fiber commonly used in performance fabrics like Sunbrella.

Known for its softness and resistance to UV rays and water.

Acrylic fabrics are used for outdoor cushions, awnings, and umbrellas due to their fade resistance and durability.

Blends

Many performance fabrics are made from blends of different synthetic fibers to achieve a balance of various qualities.

A blend of nylon and polyester could offer the durability of nylon with the wrinkle resistance of polyester.

Blends can be engineered to provide specific performance features, such as stain resistance, moisture wicking, or enhanced comfort

Any fabric with a performance coating is also considered performance fabric. This is why choosing a specific type of performance fabric can impact its performance characteristics. Different fabrics excel in different areas!

Companies like FiberSeal are able to treat fabric that is not inherently performance and provide you will tools to maintain the protective coat. Their eco-responsible proprietary protection products reduce the absorbency of fibers. Spills are blotted away! They are a go-to for when you want to kid-proof your home.

Performance brands to know:

Crypton

Crypton Home Fabric’s performance technology is resistant to stains, odor, and moisture, making it easy to clean up spills.

GREENGUARD Gold Certified, meaning it has low chemical emissions for healthier indoor air quality.

Are also free from potentially harmful levels of PFOS, PFOA, formaldehyde, heavy metals, phenols, phthalates, and odor and skin sensitizers.

If you’re looking to furnish an outdoor space, Crypton Outdoor has all of the stain-resistant features of Crypton Home in addition to enhanced anti-microbial protection and fibers that are UV-resistant for up to 1,000 hours.

InsideOut®

InsideOut Performance Fabrics® are resistant to stains, mildew, and fading from sunlight.

To clean everyday stains, you just need a mixture of soap and water, but something a little tougher requires bleach and water.

They also hold up against disinfectant spray if you want protection against germs.

Sunbrella®

Sunbrella®  fabrics are adapted for interior and exterior upholstery.

They’re resistant to stains, mold and mildew, chemicals, and UV light.

They can be power-washed, bleached, and sanitized, as well as they’re available in a range of styles that are both comfortable and beautiful.

Sunbrella®  fabrics are used to make window treatments, cushion and pillow covers, awnings, and, of course, fully upholstered furniture.

Performance fabric durability and maintenance: kid-proof your home

Woven using advanced techniques that result in tightly knit fibers to enhance the fabric’s strength and resistance to abrasion.

Made using high-quality synthetic fibers and blends that are selected for their strength and resilience.

Treated in ways that make them hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites. The tightly knit woven fabrics makes it more difficult for allergens to become trapped within the fabric, making them an optimal choice for individuals with allergies or sensitivities.

The performance finish is applied to the fabric at high heat to create a protective barrier. This repells liquids and prevents them from being absorbed into the fabric fibers.

This helps to minimize the risk of stains caused by spills and makes it easier to clean up accidents without leaving lasting marks.

When a spill happens, the liquid beads up on the surface rather than being absorbed. Subsequently, this gives you time to wipe away the spill before it can seep into the fabric and cause a stain.

Stains can be cleaned with a mild soap and water solution.

Harsh chemicals, specialized cleaning products, and professional cleaning are often not necessary.

Is it worth it?…to kid-proof your home…

When selecting fabrics for your home, you would want a long-lasting fabric that’s resistant to stains, fading, mold, and mildew, right? Not only does a performance fabric last (Crypton’s fibers resist fading for at least 1,000 hours, for example), but it’ll continue looking just as good over time as it did the day you bought it due to its clean-ability and minimal upkeep.

If you have kids and/or pets, you’ll value the ability to clean your upholstery thoroughly and easily. To “kid-proof” your home, you must think this through. Also, if you live in regions that get a lot of sun or rain and you enjoy spending time outside, it would make sense to get a performance fabric for your outdoor furniture and indoor furniture placed by windows. Therefore, you will want UV resistant fabric for furniture near natural sunlight a good part of the day so that it doesn’t fade.

If these options seem to overwhelming and you would like a professional that knows the ins and outs to guide you and recommend the appropriate fabrics for your home, the BGI team is here to help! We take the stress out of the choices!
