See more of this Willow Bend Plano project HERE!

Well it’s here again….another “must have” list but this time for kitchen design! I’ll give you the same spill….Of course, we recommend that our clients make a wish list to start and then cut out what isn’t a priority. Because let’s face it…there’s always a budget that should be taken into consideration. This list has been compiled by staying on top of the industry trends and listening to what clients are asking for in their homes. (If you missed the MUST HAVE LIST for PRIMARY BATHROOMS check it out HERE!)

Take a look below and see what you think of our kitchen design must have list and wish list. Let us know if there’s anything else you would add! We would love to hear it!

KITCHEN DESIGN MUST HAVE LIST

  • LARGE ISLAND for ample work & serving surface. Seating of course is important here as well!
  • TRIANGLE RULE: Having the sink, cooktop and refrigerator located diagonally as fundamental tasks to minimize the distance and effort required for efficient work to be performed in the kitchen. Bonus if the dishwasher is located next to the sink! This is becoming increasingly difficult the larger the kitchens are getting! Having skilled and seasoned professionals that can help layout your kitchen is always helpful. This is something we love to figure out for our clients.
  • We prefer to have the SINK CENTRALLY LOCATED in the island so the user can communicate with guests and interact within the environment and not feel stuck on dish duty away from the excitement.
  • DESIGNATED COFFEE BAR, preferably located by the refrigerator! This can be constructed with doors that can recess into the cabinet. That way you have the flexibility to leave it open or have the ability to conceal the mess.
  • Avoid HARDWARE with extended ends! We’ve found that pant loops, pockets, sweaters, etc. get caught in the extended cabinet pulls during quick cooking situations & disrupts the flow of things. It’s hard enough to convince yourself to cook after a long day, don’t add another stressor to the list! Functionality trumps form this time. Plus, you don’t have to sacrifice style for this look.
  • Conceal trash/recycling within a PULL-OUT TRASH CABINET located in the island or by major prep zones.
  • Under-cabinets and toe kick LED LIGHTING.
  • ISLAND ACCENT LIGHTING – Statement pendants or linear pendant over island. This also helps illuminate the preparation area.
  • SPICE ROLL-OUTS, located by range or cooktop
  • UTENSIL ROLL-OUTS, located by range or cooktop
  • COOKIE SHEET STORAGE, located by ovens
  • POTS AND PANS STORAGE: Deep drawers for pots and pans, located by stove
  • CLEAN CABINET DOOR DESIGN: Shaker style cabinets with maximum 2” bead/trim or perhaps much smaller for a nice modern look. Many of our clients are growing tired of seeing thick shaker style so we are opting for something much like the kitchen in this post! Or slab doors without any detail for a modern look.
  • SOFT CLOSE CABINETRY in the kitchen is a must! We may not specify it in other areas but the kitchen being a high use area is highly preferred!
  • CONTRASTING MATERIALS on island and perimeter cabinetry: consider wood on the island (bonus for fluted insets) and painted perimeters.
  • Consider GLASS INSERTS on upper cabinetry to display items. BUT, we are doing away with the display uppers that become useless! Glass that is not transparent is preferred.
  • RANGE as opposed to just a cooktop and separate wall oven
  • DRAWERS over doors! They’re just more functional.

KITCHEN DESIGN WISH LIST

  • PREP KITCHEN or WORKING KITCHEN In the event that you have a prep kitchen in addition to the main kitchen, the triangle rule isn’t always necessary in the show kitchen as most of the preparation and will be performed in the prep kitchen. The triangle rule is especially great to use in a prep kitchen as the space tends to be a bit smaller and it works with circulation restraints. This room is becoming more and more important in homes that are 8,000 square feet and more.
  • SLAB BACKSPLASH for a more luxurious look and easier maintenance
  • PULL DOWN MECHANICS on upper cabinetry that is otherwise unaccessible. This is especially becoming important in kitchens with tall ceilings and cabinetry!
  • Incorporate a variety of materials: glass door fronts (reeded or smokey glass), fluted accents
  • PANEL READY APPLIANCES
  • ROLL OUT SHELVES: These are typically behind doors so that you do not have to reach into cabinets.
  • ICE MAKER
  • WARMING DRAWER
  • CHARGING STATION: Hidden is preferred! This is something our clients truly appreciate given the amount of cords we all deal with now a days.
  • A SECOND ISLAND: If there’s room!
  • MIXER LIFT: It’s always nice when you don’t have to move this heavy small appliance around.
  • WINE ROOM nearby that is becoming a show piece like the show kitchen. We are incorporating special features into this space so they are becoming important to those that entertain and do not necessarily drink themselves!

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

  • PULL OPEN DOORS: We have had clients opt for this and then go back to adding hardware due to the easier operation and less fingerprints!
  • CONTRAST ISLAND MATERIAL FROM PERIMETER. Consider hierarchy of materials. Busier one on island, quieter one on perimeter. Can continue the quieter one into the prep kitchen for a seamless transition?
  • SMALL APPLIANCE STORAGE: Consider where the ideal location for your small appliances would be and if concealed storage is an option.

Now if this seems like a long list, that’s because it is! A new kitchen design can be overwhelming and many of our clients come to us because they are just that: overwhelmed! Our clients want every detail to be considered and for their kitchen to work for them. That’s where BGI comes in! Trends in Dallas kitchen design we are seeing are evolving towards embracing more color and texture, with cabinets becoming a focal point for expression…and we are here for it! (You know how much we LOVE color!) Acceptance of color on cabinetry and islands is on the rise, offering homeowners opportunities to infuse personality into their space. After all, this is an area of your home you will see multiple times a day – you should love it! We’ve seen in some of our Dallas projects especially that darker cabinetry is gaining popularity, adding depth and sophistication to kitchen designs. This is while rich wood tones provide a balance between modernity and warmth. Panel-ready appliances seamlessly integrate into cabinetry, contributing to a cohesive aesthetic and less busy aesthetic. High-shine finishes and lacquers are favored for their durability and sleek appearance. Meanwhile, practicality is a consideration, with push-to-open cabinetry being both trendy and convenient but not always feasible. (I.e. finger prints and just not too user friendly in function) Additionally, minimalist hardware and hidden drawers with built-in organizers like roll outs optimize functionality, catering to clients’ desires for highly efficient kitchen spaces that are meticulously planned to meet their needs. One manufacturer we utilize in just about every project is Rev-A-Shelf for all your organization needs!

Tips for Updating Your Kitchen

Updating your kitchen can breathe new life into the heart of your home, enhancing both its aesthetic appeal and functionality. Painting cabinets in off-white hues or contrasting dark tones for islands and lower cabinets can instantly refresh the space, offering a contemporary yet timeless look. Swapping out hardware for sleek, minimalist options further modernizes the kitchen, creating a cohesive and streamlined appearance. Pro Tip: if you are planning to use tab hardware you must have a conversation with the cabinet fabricator so that they can plan for their placement! Upgrading lighting fixtures, such as pendants and recessed cans adjusted to 3000 Kelvin, enhances both ambiance and functionality, ensuring optimal illumination for tasks and socializing. Pro Tip: Consistent lighting temperature throughout a space is vital! You do not want 2700 kelvin for some fixtures and 4000 kelvin for others! Incorporating under cabinet lighting illuminates countertops and enhances visibility while adding depth to the space. Waterfall countertops and slab backsplashes remain popular choices, offering a seamless, luxurious aesthetic that elevates the kitchen’s design. Showcasing prep kitchens tucked behind main cooking areas caters to the growing demand for functional yet stylish culinary spaces. Many of the Frisco, Southlake, and Dallas kitchen designs we are working on currently have this concept! Here is one of those project concepts in the works now….

Integrating Technology Into Kitchen Design

Incorporating technology into the Dallas kitchen design enhances convenience and efficiency, revolutionizing the way we interact with this essential space. Under cabinet LED strips and LED toe kicks offer discreet yet effective task and ambient lighting. Consequently, this enhances both functionality and ambiance. LED lighting integrated into shelves provides additional illumination and showcases decorative items or dinnerware. Hidden outlets beneath upper cabinets maintain a clean, uncluttered look while providing convenient access to power sources. We hate to interrupt a beautiful slab or tile backsplash with outlets! Charging stations discreetly incorporated into the kitchen design offer a convenient solution for keeping devices powered and organized, catering to modern lifestyles where connectivity is key. We like to hide the charging areas in drawers or we have just come across a new option that is available out in the open but not visible! This is a product we are looking forward to trying….

brand new marble kitchen with light gray and white marbling and square gold glass lighting

In the world of interior design, contemporary kitchens have taken center stage for their sleek, functional, and uncluttered appeal. As an experienced interior designer, I’m excited to share insights on crafting modern kitchen spaces that balance style and practicality. Here are four key points to consider:

brand new marble kitchen with light gray and white marbling and square gold glass lighting

1. Streamlined Contemporary Kitchen Design with Clean Lines

Contemporary kitchens embrace simplicity through clean lines and minimalistic designs. Think flat cabinet doors, sharp edges, and unadorned surfaces. This style creates a sense of spaciousness and order. When working with clients, I often recommend opting for neutral color palettes like whites, grays, and blacks, which can amplify the sense of sleekness.

2. Functional Layouts for Everyday Living

Functionality is a cornerstone of contemporary kitchen design. I emphasize creating layouts that facilitate ease of movement and efficiency in daily tasks. This means strategically placing work areas like cooking, prep, and washing zones. Practicality doesn’t mean sacrificing aesthetics; integrating smart storage solutions, like pull-out drawers and hidden cabinets, keeps the space tidy while maintaining a streamlined look.

3. Embrace Minimalism in Materials

Contemporary kitchens often showcase a blend of materials that contribute to the overall clean aesthetic. Materials like stainless steel, glass, and quartz countertops can bring an air of sophistication while being easy to maintain. As an interior designer, I find that incorporating a variety of textures, like matte and glossy finishes, adds depth without overwhelming the space.

4. Incorporate Statement Lighting

Lighting plays a pivotal role in contemporary kitchen design. Pendant lights with clean, geometric shapes can be excellent focal points while providing functional task lighting. Under-cabinet lighting adds a touch of ambiance and practicality, illuminating workspaces. Integrating energy-efficient LED fixtures aligns with the contemporary ethos of sustainability.

As an interior designer, I’m here to guide you through this exciting journey of transforming your kitchen into a sleek and practical masterpiece.

hello sourAV

In the world of interior design, trends come and go, but some concepts have the power to transform not only the appearance of our homes but also the way we live in them. One such trend that has captured the hearts of homeowners is the concept of “eat-in kitchens.” This ingenious design style seamlessly blends the functionality of a kitchen with the comfort and warmth of a dining area, creating a space that is not only visually appealing but also highly practical. Let’s explore the charm and allure of eat-in kitchens, using the stunning transformations showcased on the website of Interior Design Dallas as our inspiration.

The Evolution of Eat-In Kitchens: A Fusion of Aesthetics and Purpose

Eat-in kitchens are more than just a design fad; they represent a conscious shift towards a more connected and casual lifestyle. Traditionally, kitchens were purely utilitarian spaces, tucked away from the rest of the home. However, as family dynamics have evolved and the way we use our homes has changed, the kitchen has become the heart of the household. With this evolution, the idea of combining a dining area with the kitchen emerged, allowing for a seamless transition between cooking, eating, and socializing.

Check out this project’s after photos HERE

1. Before: A Conventional Kitchen Space

Before the transformation, many kitchens were isolated, cramped, and lacking the warmth necessary for an inviting dining experience. The focus was on practicality, with little attention paid to aesthetics. While cooking was done efficiently, the joy of sharing a meal with family and friends was often relegated to a separate dining room.

2. After: An Inviting and Functional Eat-In Kitchen

The “after” photo presents a captivating contrast, showcasing an eat-in kitchen that has been thoughtfully designed to exude both style and functionality. With a harmonious blend of materials, colors, and textures, the kitchen seamlessly flows into a cozy dining space. Open floor plans with strategically placed furniture allow for effortless communication between the cooking area and the dining zone. The result is a warm, inviting atmosphere that encourages everyone to gather and linger around the table.

3. Creating a Focal Point: The Dining Nook

One common feature of many eat-in kitchens is the incorporation of a dining nook. This cleverly integrated space utilizes corners or bay windows to house a small dining table and chairs. By surrounding it with plush cushions and soft upholstery, the dining nook becomes an irresistible spot for relaxation and conversation.

4. Embracing Versatility: The Multi-Functional Island

In these transformed kitchens, islands take on a new role beyond being a mere countertop extension. The addition of seating around the island creates a casual dining area that is perfect for quick meals or entertaining guests while preparing food. This versatility makes the kitchen a hub of activity, where the joy of cooking and the pleasure of dining merge seamlessly.

5. Bringing the Outdoors In: An Abundance of Natural Light

Incorporating large windows or glass doors in the eat-in kitchen design allows an influx of natural light, making the space feel bright and airy. Sunlight has the remarkable ability to uplift moods and promote a sense of well-being, making meals even more enjoyable.

In Conclusion: Elevate Your Lifestyle with an Eat-In Kitchen

As the “before” and “after” photos on Interior Design Dallas demonstrate, embracing the concept of eat-in kitchens can truly elevate the style and functionality of your home. By merging the kitchen and dining spaces, you create an environment that encourages togetherness and facilitates everyday living.

So, if you find yourself yearning for a space that embodies both beauty and purpose, consider incorporating the elegant simplicity of eat-in kitchens into your home’s design. With a focus on aesthetics, comfort, and practicality, you can transform your kitchen into a cherished gathering place where memories are made, and connections are strengthened.

hello sourAV

The 2023 Las Vegas Kitchen and Bath Show is one of the most exciting events in the home renovation and design industry, and the 2023 edition did not disappoint. We were so excited to attend so that we could stay up to date on everything new for our projects! The number of products was so vast we are breaking down our favorites into two blogs.

This year’s show featured hundreds of exhibitors showcasing the latest products and innovations in the kitchen and bath industry. From stylish hardware to innovative appliances and sustainable materials, here are some of the best products that stood out at the show:

Kitchen Hardware

The latest trends in kitchen hardware include sleek and modern designs as well as traditional styles. Smart kitchen technology was also a major focus, with touchless faucets and voice-activated appliances. The use of mixed materials, such as combining wood and metal finishes, was also popular…we are LOVING the mix of different finishes in everything!

Refrigeration

We were excited to see the latest smart refrigerators, wine coolers, and designs that blend seamlessly into kitchen cabinetry especially since we have been working on numerous new construction projects! Many of the newest refrigeration products were not only stylish and sleek but also energy-efficient and sustainable.

Kitchen Countertop Materials

Quartz remained a popular choice, with many new colors and finishes on display and even more realistic than ever. Quartzite and marble also made a strong showing, with unique patterns and textures that add a touch of luxury to any kitchen or bathroom. We love the touch of metallic in Cambria’s new products and looking for the right product to showcase it.

We love ALL of the Cambria kitchen and bath surfaces!

Bathtubs

Freestanding tubs continued to be a favorite, with many exhibitors showcasing innovative designs and materials. This is definitely something our clients want. In fact, 100% of our clients ask for a free-standing tub over a built-in now! Jetted and soaking tubs also received a lot of attention, with many new features such as built-in LED lighting and sound systems. One piece of advice with jetted tubs, make sure you pick it out early before the foundation so that your builder can figure out the motor placement!

Staged Rooms

One of the most exciting parts of the Las Vegas Kitchen and Bath Show was the staged rooms, which allow attendees to see products in a real-life setting. This is a fantastic visual! The use of mixed materials and unique textures, such as wood and metal finishes, was particularly popular in the staged rooms.

Overall, the 2023 Las Vegas Kitchen and Bath Show was a huge success, showcasing the latest products and innovations in the kitchen and bath industry. The Las Vegas Kitchen and Bath Show is not to be missed! I believe we will be attending annually just like we do the furniture market! Next Year the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) conference runs from February 27 – 29, 2024 in Las Vegas.

hello sourAV

Today we are giving you the inside scoop on some of the up-and-coming interior design trends. We are welcoming the new – the latest on home office spaces, wood-grained and touch-open cabinetry, soft cozy fabrics, and touch-less faucets. These design trends range from the oldest material known to man, all the way to the latest in modern technology.

  1. Dedicated home office or multi-use space.

With all that has been going on in the world, many of us have experienced bringing our work home. In doing so, we need a dedicated space to work, which has inspired many of us to create a home office – either upgrading the space we already have or transforming a room into an office.

Things to consider when creating a home office space (or a multi-use space for your kids and husband to also work from home):

    * Computer – It may be time for an upgrade. Your laptop needs to meet your daily demands.
    * Dedicated desk space – Whether a table or an actual desk, you need a place to spread out. Standing desks are growing in popularity.
    * An ergonomic chair – Give your back some love.
    * A reliable wireless router – You need a trustworthy Wi-Fi connection, because this is your livelihood.
    * Equipment – Good lighting, headset, microphone, a second (or third!) monitor, ergonomic keyboard, wireless mouse, charging accessories, a hyper drive (to plug in all of the extra USB connections), etc.

*Optional: A room with a window for natural lighting, a friendly plant to add color and keep you company, your favorite scented candle, and optional… pants. 😊

  1. Wood grain and natural finish cabinetry.

Natural wood cabinetry in kitchens, bathrooms, and offices have a beauty that adds warmth and luxury. Alder, cherry, hickory, maple, oak, and walnut are the recommended types of wood for high-traffic areas. The trend is still hot to bring a touch of nature inside.

When cabinetry is finished with a natural stain, it highlights the wood’s grain to bring out its unique personality and style. This individual texture can then complement the additional features, decorations, and accessories in the room. In fact, choosing natural cabinetry allows for both a simple and elegant or a more modern and drastic backsplash or flooring.

pastedGraphic_1.png

  1. Soft, textural cozy fabrics.

Who doesn’t take pleasure in running their palm over an exquisite fabric like velvet, mohair, soft bouclé, or hair on hide. We want design that not only makes us feel good but also feels good to touch.

When choosing material for a couch, try a rich, deep shade of luxurious velvet or the knobby, warm comfort of a soft bouclé. Pillows also are perfect covered in these gorgeous materials. I am dreaming right now of cuddling up with a velvet pillow.

One of the first Interior Design materials ever, continues on in a modern way. It is Hair on Hide. We’ve written more about that here, to share that even side tables can be covered with hide. You have to see the gorgeous pieces!

  2. Touch-open cabinetry to replace hardware.

Cabinet doors without handles use a mechanical opening feature which allows you to simply push the door front to open it. It works with face frame or frameless, overlay, and inset cabinetry to open and close perfectly every time. It provides a unique solution for upper doors in that it opens upward and is out of the way. This application is perfect for drawers too, and you don’t even need any additional space in the cabinetry to install it.

Gaining a lot of traction now for kitchens and remodels is a very handy electronic system that allows users to open bottom cabinetry with a wave of their foot. These are perfect for trash cans, recycling bins, or, really, any bottom cabinetry. There is no need to touch the cabinet door to open.

Some systems have a ‘wave of the foot’ mechanism located in the kick board below the cabinet. This triggers then release and open the cabinet or drawer. There are other systems that have more of a ‘kick-and-go foot pedal’ automatic hands-free opening systems. These devices are perfect when needing to throw items away without getting germs on the cabinet door or for any bottom drawer or cabinet when putting heavy pans or multiple dishes. Pop the mechanism with your foot and watch it open.

  3. Technology touch-less faucets.

Motion sensor faucets are not just for the public restrooms anymore. It’s not only logical and more cleanly, but also elegant and modern. There are two features to look for. The single sensor is at the foot of the faucet that detects your hand or a container to initiate the water. It turns the water on when you place your hands under the faucet and turns the water off when you take your hands out. The double-sensor has one extra wave sensor on the neck of the faucet. You get to control the flow of water with a wave of your hand.

Three main reasons to choose a touchless faucet (when you’re needing replacement) are:

  1. It’s so clean and safe. No touching the handle getting everything under the sun on the handle, washing, rinsing, and then touching the handle again. It’s so much more ‘germ-free’.
  2. It’s very quick and easy. From kids to great grandma, all you have to do is hold your hands under the faucet and it works. Anyone can do it.
  3. It’s so futuristic. You and your guests are going to love how so very modern it is, every time you use it.

Also, not going away in faucet design are the black finishes and brushed gold, but a new shiny updated antique brass is here too.

We are using these design trends daily in our Interior Design, Dallas-based business all while maintaining a classic timeless overall design for our clients. If you’d like to see more, follow us on Instagram at @bgidesigner.

Best,

hello sourAV

Every home has a story, with plot twists and character development and a history. But sometimes the characters outgrow their story and a new chapter has to start. Approaching a remodel in this way can be helpful. The house has the same bones it always has; a remodel simply adds new life to an old story and gives it a new beginning. When starting a remodel, it’s important to look at the bones of the house, and the people who live there. These are the foundations from which the new design should derive from.

As the original owners of this house that sits right on a golf course, it was important to the client that the space be made more efficient and open to take advantage of the beautiful view and create the functionality that the space was lacking. As seen in the before pictures below, the kitchen and sitting room were both cramped. The wall between he sitting room and the kitchen left the kitchen dark since a lot of light came into the sitting room.

Taking out the walls around the old sitting room was the first thing to address! Removing the walls made this house feel so different, and things were barely getting started!

With an open floor plan, the next thing to think about was what to do with all that space. Adding in a large island, with room for seating, framed the kitchen area nicely without closing it in. And the space that used to be the sitting room is now open to become a beautiful new dining space.

The plan is to add bench beneath the window and a large table with plenty of chairs. This great room will be a great place for entertaining. The outdated look of the old kitchen will be a thing of the past as flat modern cabinets take their place. The island was outfitted with a quartzite countertop that is both beautiful and durable. Quartz counters were added to the perimeter of the kitchen to coordinate with the island. This remodel is already breathing new life into an old, cherished home and a new chapter for these homeowners is beginning!

Keep an eye on our social media accounts for an update on this project!

hello sourAV

A backsplash can be the pièce de résistance to a kitchen design. It’s often the first thing that draws the eye of guests or potential buyers. And this can be both a good and a bad thing. A tile that is too flashy may only suit certain tastes, whereas a backlash that lacks luster can be just as distracting and boring. Let’s tale a look at the hottest trends and timeless classics that could make selecting the perfect backpsplash a little easier!

More often, slabs of stone are being used as backsplashes. This gives a seamless look from the counter to the backsplash, and is arguably the easiest to clean since there are no grout lines to grab onto those pesky food particles. It also checks one more thing off of your list of things to select. A win-win!

Akin to the slab style, large scale tiles are another up and coming trend! It doesn’t take a lot of tiles to fill all that is needed in a space, and there are also very little to no grout lines with this style. Large tiles are also a much more wallet friendly option compared to a full slab backsplash.

Slab and large format tile are one of our favorite trends. In fact, we currently have projects that we are implementing this sleek design into and can’t wait to show you how it turns out!

Subway tile is probably the most classic tile that appeases to almost anyone. It’s especially trendy in elongated styles that are laid out straight or in herringbone or chevron patterns instead of off center like the more “traditional” look. This design is also seeing more materials aside from the typical white or flat colors that are often expected, such as the silver leaf shown in the images above!

Another classic style are hand-made tiles that are painted or stamped, such as cement tile. The encaustic tile shown above is a beautiful example of this trend! Hand-made tiles often offer a more unique or customizable design. Anything that demonstrates a handmade or artisan feel is coming in hot right now!

Last, but certainly not least, grout color! The grout color can be as important as the tile as it can take away or add to the overall look. Make sure to specify 1/16″ grout lines when possible. Some tiles prohibit grout lines this small, but it is the best result if it’s possible!

So tell us…What’s your favorite trend or classic style?

hello sourAV

“The kitchen is the heart of the home” is an old saying, but its truth has never been questioned. When people gather, there is always food. A kitchen counter is the place where all those special family meals are made. A place where friends and family stand and chat around all the finger foods. For some it’s the place where coloring books and crayons stay sprawled out for hours as a masterpiece is made. The kitchen counter can be one of the most used surfaces in a home. It needs to last, and it needs to be a place people keep coming back to.

Counters vary considerably in style, cost, color and durability. The most popular trends for counters in 2019 include having a thicker profile and using a waterfall edge (both shown in the image above). White, black or grey counters are showing the most popularity. Statement island counters that use more colorful stones or poured concrete are also on trend.

Selecting a counter can be a challenge for any homeowner. Especially when, in a lot of cases, you can’t have it all. Let’s break down the most common counter choices and their pros and cons:

Granite:

  • Pros
    • Middle price range
    • Wide variety of colors
    • Low maintenance
  • Cons
    • Chips easily
    • Not available in a fluid-like look such as marble or quartz

Marble:

  • Pros
    • Bright whites that are unavailable in other materials
    • Elegant and clean
  • Cons
    • High price range
