A Designer’s Paint Sheen Guide: When and Where to use Paint

Choosing the right paint color is only part of the decision—the finish can make just as much of an impact. Each paint sheen offers its own look, level of durability, and ideal application. Some finishes are perfect for creating soft, sophisticated walls, while others are better suited for high-traffic areas that need to withstand everyday wear.

Selecting the correct sheen can be overwhelming….That’s where we can help with this guide!

Gloss  – 

• Impact on Cabinets, Ceiling, Furniture, and Exteriors
• A beautiful contemporary look
• Most Washable paint finish
• Shows the most imperfections on walls

Semi-Gloss  –

• Best for Cabinetry, Doors and Trim
• Washable and durable for high traffic areas
• Hides imperfections on walls better

Eg-Shel  –

• Best for Walls in High traffic areas and exteriors
• Very durable and easily washable
• Smoother finish with a slight shine

Matte  –

• Best on walls in common spaces
• Less Washable and durable
• Its angular shine gives walls an even smooth look

Flat  –

• Best on ceilings, textured walls, and Exteriors
• Least Cleanable and prone to stains and scuffs
• Provides a rich color on a non-reflective surface
• Easier to touch up

Or…when all else fails….let’s wallpaper! We absolutely love to incorporate a more unexpected finish. Whether it is on the walls or ceiling, wall coverings are a go to! Additionally, other finishes we’ve seen make a come back are lime wash and a more updated Venetian plaster! For example, we’ve been utilizing these in our new builds.
